Yet again, lawmakers reject budget deal

SACRAMENTO — Lacking Republican support, the Senate on Friday rejected a modified version of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's compromise budget proposal. With that, lawmakers careened toward the weekend close of a 2008 legislative session that could go down as the least productive in history.

If no budget is adopted before the regular session ends Sunday night, a 30-day countdown will begin that imperils nearly every other action taken by lawmakers in this session.
