State bureau chief Timm Herdt has been a writer and editor at the Ventura County Star and its predecessor, the Ventura County Star-Free Press, for 30 years. During his tenure, he has done everything from reporting at the sidelines at high school football games, to covering city halls, to serving as the Opinion page editor from 1985 through 1996. In 1997 he opened The Star's bureau in Sacramento, reporting on state government government and politics from California's capital. For more than two decades he has been writing a weekly column on politics and public affairs. Herdt, 53, is a graduate of the School of Journalism at The Ohio State University.
