John Krist is a senior reporter and Opinion-page columnist at the Ventura County Star, where he has worked since 1983. His weekly commentaries on land-use policy, natural resources and environmental issues are distributed by Scripps Howard News Service, and have been published in newspapers throughout the United States. The winner of numerous writing awards and journalism fellowships, he is the author of three books about California’s parks and wilderness areas, and has contributed to books on urban renewal and wildfire policy. His most recently published book is Voyage of Rediscovery: Exploring the New West in the Footsteps of Lewis and Clark.
He is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara, with a degree in cultural anthropology. He and his wife, Jean, live in Ventura, and have a son and daughter in college. When he’s not working, he usually can be found running, hiking, backpacking or paddling somewhere in the West.
