Campus in decay

A tour of old Oxnard High as it now stands.

Mutual benefits of gleaning

One property is especially grateful for foodshare volunteers who regularly pick the fruit from her orchard. Each year, they glean up to 9,000 pounds of fruit from her property that is distributed to centers across the county; fruit that would otherwise rot on the ground.

Academic Decathlon 2008

Moorpark High School won first place in the 2008 U.S. Academic Decathlon in Garden Grove on Saturday and did it with the highest score in the 40-year history of the game.

Combat training

The 600 Seabees who are part of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Four recently spent two weeks at Fort Hunter Liggett in central California in a field combat exercise preparing for deployment in Iraq. In a simulated war game staged by a team of about 150 members of the Seabees 31st Readiness Group, the seamen thwarted ambushes, responded to scud missile attacks and administered humanitarian aide all while doing the kind of construction work they would do while deployed.

Tracking Foreclosures

Code enforcement officers in Oxnard have begun to track homes in foreclosure to try and prevent them from falling into disrepair and becoming magnets for crime and vandalism. The city is ground zero for defaults and foreclosures in the county, and already this year the city has a list of more than 600 properties that they''re watching.

Balancing school and a child

This year is the 10th anniversary of Pacific High School''s First Steps Child Development Center. Pacific High is a continuation school in Ventura that recently received the state model continuation school award. There are currently 40 teen parents and expecting parents at the school. While the teens study in class, their children are also learning at the First Steps Center.

When a Moorpark couple's baby decided to make an early arrival, firefighters and paramedics found themselves playing doctor in the front seat of a Nissan.
