Maxwell Dyce quickly became a sprint standout

As a sixth-grader, Maxwell Dyce knew his days as a baseball player were numbered. "I was starting to get a little fast," remembers Dyce. "The coaches asked me to lay down bunts and run hard to first." Beating out bunts could only get Dyce so far. Full story »

From start to finish, it wasn't the healthiest of seasons for Valexsia Droughn. A nagging hamstring injury limited the Rio Mesa High freshman's training in March. A bad cold caught the fastest girls' sprinter in Ventura County at the CIF State Track and Field Championships. Full story »

Rio Mesa finds silver lining in second-place run

Just short of a county record, Rio Mesa High was almost as close to a gold-medal performance. Turning in the fourth fastest time in Ventura County history — 0.14 seconds shy of an 18-year-old county and school record — Rio Mesa was runner-up in the girls' 4x100 relay in 47.17 seconds at the CIF Track and Field Championships at Cerritos College on Saturday. Minus its potential championship relay team, St. Bonaventure High nearly pulled off a team championship Saturday. With one relay and two individual titles, St. Bonaventure finished runner-up to Division IV boys' champion Serra, 69-54, in the CIF Track and Field Divisional Finals on Saturday at Mount San Antonio College. Bettisworth earns award

Todd Bettisworth, an Oak Park High graduate, was one of 12 student-athletes recognized by the UC San Diego athletics department as a recipient of the 2008 National Student-Athlete Day Award.
