Rubicon Theatre prepares to take audiences around the world in 10 days

Thursday, July 10, 2008
Send in a clown, and you get sweet humanity. French mime Julien Cottereau, a former Cirque du Soleil clown who has entertained children in Afghanistan and Palestinian territories, said of young refugees: "They want to fill their bellies, and they want to fill their hearts. That's the contradiction of a clown's life. With one eye he laughs, and with the other he weeps." Send in a Samuel Beckett character, and you get raw humanity. Full story »

From his new home in Oxnard, singer Nicola Congiu is ready to wow the U.S.

Thursday, June 5, 2008
Up-and-coming singer Nicola Congiu, who just moved to Oxnard from his native Italy, has been compared to all three of these genre-busting pop artists, whose swing, classical and/or operatic voices, charming looks and, in the case of Josh Groban, mastery of Italian as a second singing language have swelled the hearts of (mostly female) fans Full story »

Ojai Music Festival will showcase Steve Reich's groundbreaking music

Thursday, May 29, 2008
Consider this gem from the Guardian of London: "There's just a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history, and Steve Reich is one of them." With its strong tonality, scant harmonic development and insistent repetitive patterns, Reich's work seemed at loggerheads with most 20th-century music, steeped in dissonance and dense ideas. In fact, had it not been for a new generation of fans who embraced jazz, rhythm and blues, world beat and DJ-driven hip-hop, Reich might have wound up as little more than a footnote in musical history. Santa Barbara exhibit frames picture-book illustrations in a serious light

Thursday, May 22, 2008
The hallowed walls of art museums drip with eminence or, in the case of some abstract art, just drips. At the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, however, a little whimsy has seeped in. You'll spy a bunny who's lost his blue jacket after a romp in the garden, a bear popping out of a hat and Goldilocks with a goofy grin. They're part of an exhibit of art from children's picture books, and although the 70 pieces on display are hanging a few inches lower on the walls than other artwork at the museum, the quality is just as high. Percussion-fueled E Family band plays Sunday at the Strawberry Festival

Thursday, May 15, 2008
Billing them as the "E Family featuring Sheila E." sounds a little awkward, but promoters insist we refer to the group this way to emphasize that the concert is a family gig, not a Sheila E. show. Let's see: Tag on the phrase "featuring Sheila E.," which singles out Ms. Escovedo and adds more than twice the letters of "E Family" but don't emphasize her presence. Full story »
