The Talk: Beijing will never be quite the same

Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008
The Beijing Olympics are over and what have we learned? Well, for one thing, we've learned that "live" doesn't always mean "live." We've learned that things are more live on the East Coast than they are on the West Coast. We've learned that we can land a man on the moon, but we can't take the word "LIVE" off a TV screen on the West Coast once it's appeared on a TV screen on the East Coast. Full story »

David Lassen's postcard from Beijing: August 25, 2008

Monday, Aug. 25, 2008
High among the best things about the end of the Olympics is this: I won't have to look at the Fuwa any more. The Fuwa, as you are unavoidably aware if you've been in Beijing for the last three weeks, are the Olympic mascots. There are five of them: Beibei the fish (which looks nothing like a fish), Jingjing the Panda, Huanhuan the Olympic flame (which has flame-like hair), Yingying the Tibetan Antelope (which looks nothing like an antelope) and Nini the Swallow (which looks like a kid wearing a bird's head hat). Schroeder's water polo team loses final to powerful Hungary, ending remarkable run

Monday, Aug. 25, 2008
After taking big steps, the United States men's water polo team ended up on the second step of the podium. Sunday, after losing 14-10 to Hungary in the gold-medal game at the Beijing Olympics, that felt more like a disappointment than the achievement it was. But in time, coach Terry Schroeder and his players know that will change. Full story »

Lassen: Olympic ideals not part of this country

Monday, Aug. 25, 2008
The 2008 Olympics were incredibly well run, featured some magnificent athletic achievements and will leave an unmatched architectural legacy. I'm glad I was here to see them, and to see China. Nonetheless, I'm still far from sure it was a good idea to bring them here. Full story »

Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008
While U.S. athletes have stayed silent about politics during these Olympic Games, their actions have spoken volumes. Is the 'Redeem Team' better than the 1992 'Dream Team'?

Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008
On the surface, the question sounds absurd. Could a team that included the likes of Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan not be the greatest Olympic basketball team? The answer is yes. Full story »

Subways are a great thing when you're traveling. Not only can you get where you're going with a far higher degree of certainty than with a bus — railroad tracks are fixed; bus routes can change — but they provide a great window into the everyday slice of life, whether in New York or Milan or Athens or Sydney.
