The world-famous musicians that gathered this weekend brought new insights for reviewer Rita Moran.


“Music for 18 Musicians” won Reich a Grammy in 1999, and his “Double Sextet,” which kicked off Sunday’s five-hour marathon finale, earned him a Pulitzer Prize this year.

“Apparently there is sun in Ojai,” quipped eighth blackbird percussionist Matthew Duvall from the Libbey Bowl stage as Sunday morning’s Ojai Music Festival concert opened with bright rays piercing through fluttering leaves. After a gray Saturday, the new-music sextet and “friends” took the stage for Steve Reich’s “Music for 18 Musicians,” where intrepid pianists, string players, clarinetists, singers and seven percussionists set about giving the pulsing, ingeniously shaped work a riveting run. Group in Ojai looks into local currency

Ojai activists are hoping to launch a new form of local money as soon as this year, but no one knows yet what the currency will look like.



Nor have they agreed on what it will be called, its denomination, whether it will be printed on paper or be a plastic debit card or work off an Internet site.



“We have an amazing range of perspectives on what kind of complementary currency would work best, but we all have exactly the same goal,” said Dave Farber, an activist, philanthropist and founding member of the Ojai Economy Group, which has about a dozen members and has been meeting since March.

Some may look at the cozy, peaceful town of Ojai as a retreat. For the Ojai Music Festival, however, the word is not “retreat,” but “forward,” ever engaged in what’s percolating in the world of music. Virtually guaranteeing that the banner is held high in the renowned festival’s 63rd year was the choice of new-music ensemble eighth blackbird as this year’s music director.
