Man enters not guilty plea in Ventura standoff

A 39-year-old man who is accused of shooting up his Ventura neighborhood after he had been drinking pleaded not guilty to charges of assault with a firearm upon a peace officer during his arraignment Friday.



Jeffrey Stephen Fennell of Ventura also pleaded not guilty to shooting into an inhabited dwelling and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

New citizens reflect on Independence Day

After a lifetime of waiting, 94-year-old Rosalio Rodriguez has finally achieved something he always dreamed about.



He is, at last, a citizen of the United States of America.



Rodriguez and his wife, Guadalupe, 78, who have been married for 65 years and live in Oxnard, took the Oath of Allegiance at a citizenship ceremony at the Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pomona on April 28.

Sarah Palin resigning as Alaska governor

WASILLA, Alaska (AP) — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin surprised supporters Friday and announced she is resigning from office at the end of the month without explaining why she plans to step down — throwing into question whether she would seek a run for the White House in 2012.



The news rattles a Republican Party plagued with setbacks in recent weeks, including extramarital affairs disclosed by two other 2012 presidential prospects, Nevada Sen. John Ensign and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford.
