The Upham Hotel & Country House in Santa Barbara has joined Historic Hotels of America, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and a brand of Preferred Hotel Group.

It is one of more than 220 hotels and resorts throughout the country recognized by HHA for preserving and maintaining its historic integrity, architecture and ambiance.

To be selected for membership in National Trust Historic Hotels, a hotel must be at least 50 years old, listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, or recognized locally as having historic significance.

The Upham opened its doors in 1871 as the Lincoln House, originally owned by Amasa Lincoln and family. It became the Upham in 1898, when the property was purchased by Cyrus Upham.

It is Southern California’s oldest continuously operating hotel, recently celebrating its 137th anniversary.

Constant restoration and care has kept the 50-room hotel in good repair over the years.

The current owner, Carl Johnson, purchased the property in 1982.

Celebrities among the bed-and-breakfast hotel’s clientele over the years include British author Aldous Huxley, who wintered there in the 1960s, and in current times actor George Clooney.

For more information, check http://www.uphamhotel.com, or phone 962-0058 or 800-727-0876.

The hotel is at 1404 De La Vina St., Santa Barbara.
