Ventura Raceway: Wood nails Hammer Memorial

Jimmy Wood captured the 20-lap Dick Hammer Memorial main event Saturday night at the Ventura Raceway Vintage Outlaw Motorcycle Races.

The Ascot Park Reunion was a big success, attracting 219 entries and nearly filling the stadium as usual.

Wood earned a wire-to-wire victory over Jethro Halbert. Michael Avila was third in the $5,000 feature race.

Doug Reyes was victorious in the 10-lap Beginner Motocross Open feature. Jordan Graham was second. Life Kelley was the 250cc Amateur Modern feature winner. Brandon Rothell finished and Brand Johnson was third.

Dave Alexander and Matt Davis prevailed in the four-lap New Zealand Sidecars race. Joe Jones and Jimmy Olsen placed second in the three-team field.

Kayl Kolkman led all the way in the Hand Shift Indians and Harleys 10-lap feature. Ronnie Brown was second and Eddie Castro third.

Lincoh James prevailed in the Amateur Modern Open after passing three riders in the 10-lap race. Brad Baker finished second.

Brown rumbled his way from 11th place to first in the Hooligan/Chopper 10-lap feature. Joe Pape, who started on the pole, finished second.

Travis Henderson, a 19-year-old Speedway Bikes specialist, defeated veteran standout "Fast" Eddie Castro of Ojai. Dale Facchini was third.

In the four-lap Vintage Speedway race, Bryan Thompson led from start to finish. Dan Waller was second.

Tom Horton was the 750cc Vintage 10-lap race winner. John Hateley finished second.

Horton was also the winner of the 500cc Vintage main. John Lundgren placed second, chasing Horton for 10 laps. Hateley was third.

Tim Dowd was the winner of the Pit Bike Race. Adam Booth was second and Dennis Boyle third in the 20-bike race for 10 laps.

Brandon Rothell won the Kids 80cc main. Casey Cahoon was second and Brandon Weisz was third.

Hunter Snyder was victorious in the 10-lap Kids 50cc races. Jared Madrid was second and Tyler Boswell third.

Racing legend Kenny Roberts was on hand for an autograph session before the heat races. Gene Romero, a former Dayton 200 winner, served as the Ascot Reunion Grand Marshal. Bruce Brown, the filmmaker of the classic "On Any Sunday" and Mert Lawwill, a former national AMA champion, were back at Ventura Raceway for a second time this season.

Ventura Raceway promoter Jim Naylor has announced plans for more motorcycle racing events in 2009.

The Ventura Racing Association Sprint Cars along with the Senior Sprints, Pro Dwarf Cars, USAC Ford Focus Midgets, USAC Junior Focus Midgets, Junior Midgets and Mini Dwarfs will be in action Saturday. There's five more Saturday nights of racing in Ventura.
