Even though it's managed by the son of a Hall of Fame quarterback, the Oaks Christian School offense is still a work in progress.

Malcolm Jones rushed for three first-half touchdowns Friday night to lead the Lions to a 48-6 non-league victory over visiting Diamond Ranch.

Quarterback Nick Montana, the son of former NFL great Joe Montana, wound up passing for 196 yards and two scores, but it was Jones who picked up the slack when Montana was sacked four times in the first half.

"We continue to be a little inconsistent on offense. It takes us a little while to get going," said Oaks Christian coach Bill Redell. "Malcolm had a real great game; I thought Nick came back and played well. I thought (backup quarterback) Tony Macarena when he came in played well. The defense came in and played a great game."

Montana finished 10 for 19 for 196 yards, but was held to 73 yards in the first half. At one point he was only 3 for 9.

Jones scored on runs of 31, 16 and 7 yards in the first half. He had 88 of his 130 yards on 10 carries by halftime.

Redell said the offense for Oaks Christian (3-0) is still evolving, especially since Montana was a relatively late transfer to the school from De La Salle/Concord.

"Nick's still learning the offense a little bit because he sort of came in late," Redell said. "I think it's just a little big of rustiness. We'll get it straightened out."

While Montana has the eyebrow-raising pedigree, it was Jones, the 6-foot, 217-pound junior, who was dazzling on the Thorson Stadium turf Friday night.

"Malcolm's just outstanding," said Redell. "He's one of the great players in the country and everybody knows it. He had another outstanding game tonight."

Montana, meanwhile, came around in the second half against Diamond Ranch (1-2). One play after he was sacked a fifth time early in the third quarter, he connected with Brian Owusu for a 56-yard touchdown. Seven minutes later, he threw a 43-yard scoring pass to Scott Arellano.

Diamond Ranch spoiled the shutout when Amari Staten scored on a 13-yard run 2:17 left in the third quarter.

Macarena, the transfer from St. Bonaventure who was given the starting job at Oaks Christian during the summer before losing it to Montana, came in after that and threw a 7-yard touchdown pass at the start of the fourth quarter to Blair Holliday.

Ryan Landseadel completed the Lions' scoring with a 40-yard run with 7:52 left.
