The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) dedicated its new classroom in a ceremony and reception on Sept. 10. More than 70 guests representing the University, agencies associated with the aging in Ventura County, regional cultural organizations, OLLI members and instructors, and donors heard welcomes and congratulations from CSUCI President Richard R. Rush; Dr. Martin Kaplan, OLLI Director; Mary Bitterman, Osher Foundation President; Gordon Yenokida, M.D. of the Regal Medical Group representing the Merkin Family Foundation; and Larry Hatch, on behalf of OLLI members and donors.

The ceremony was followed by a reception and tour of the state-of-the-art classroom which is housed in the new John Spoor Broome Library on the CSUCI campus The room was provided to OLLI by the Library Administration, and the items necessary to equip it-furniture and electronic equipment-was made possible by many generous donations by OLLI members and friends. A gift of $50,000 from the Merkin Family Foundation was critical in equipping the room. In recognition of this essential support, the room has been named the Richard Merkin room.

The opening of the class room reflects the relationship between CSUCI and OLLI. The University and Library Administration are committed to serving the regional community, and OLLI reaches out to community residents over the age of 50.

The Richard Merkin room seats up to 60 students, and will be important in continuing the OLLI mission to provide high-quality university classes exclusively for persons over 50. These classes cover a broad range of disciplines in a liberal arts education, but with no tests, grade or college credits. In each of three, six- to eight-week sessions per year, 15 or more classes are offered for members on the CSUCI campus and in Ojai, Ventura, Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks. This new class room will enable OLLI to accommodate its growing membership, which exceeded 500 members in 2007-08.
