Authorities today released new details about the arrest of a man suspected of keeping a 13-year-old girl as a sex slave near Moorpark.
Shawn Damon Barth, 46, was arrested Monday morning when Ventura County sheriff's deputies, who were watching him, stopped his pickup truck in the Ventura area, said Detective Eric Buschow.
Authorities suspect Barth raped the girl daily for the past three months in a motor home parked in an orchard near the 4000 block of Hitch Boulevard west of Moorpark, Buschow said at a press conference at the Sheriff Department's Thousand Oaks station.
The suspect was scheduled to be arraigned in Ventura County court this afternoon on charges of child rape, oral copulation on a child and continuous sexual abuse. He was being held in Ventura County Jail today in lieu of $1 million bail.
Barth allegedly kept the girl isolated in the motor home, parked more than a mile from the road, except when he allowed her to go to school, authorities said.
The owner of the orchard allowed Barth to park there in exchange for a fee, but didn't know about the alleged abuse, Buschow said.
The girl was taken into protective custody last week after Moorpark Unified School District officials tipped off authorities about possible abuse.
The girl began attending middle school in Moorpark at the beginning of this semester.
School officials became suspicious after they made a routine request for records from her last school in Yucaipa in San Bernardino County, Buschow said.
When Yucaipa school officials learned the girl was living with Barth, they told their counterparts in Moorpark there had been allegations he molested the girl in San Bernardino County, Buschow said.
Moorpark school officials then contacted police and the county Human Services Agency.
Barth claimed he was the girl's guardian, though he does not have legal custody of her, said Moorpark Police Chief Capt. Ron Nelson.
Authorities did not say exactly how the girl ended up living with Barth.
She was not kidnapped or reported missing, Buschow said.
Buschow said Barth previously had a relationship with the girl's mother, but he did not elaborate.
He declined to discuss the girl's mother other than to say she is a witness in the case and that she is cooperating with police.
The girl did not tell anyone about the abuse.
After she was taken into protective custody, she told authorities Barth threatened her and she was afraid to leave, Buschow said.
"She was a psychological prisoner," he said.
Barth first had contact with the girl in San Bernardino County, and investigators believe they may have traveled around Southern California in the motor home, Buschow said.
The abuse may have gone on for years, Nelson said.
Barth lived several years ago in Oak Park, Buschow said.
He does not have a permanent job, and supports himself by collecting various items and selling them them at swap meets, Nelson said.
Sitting in the parking lot of the Thousand Oaks sheriff's station today, Barth's white pickup had items including surf boards, boogie boards, a propane tank and a fan strapped to its bed.
The motorhome where the alleged abuse occurred has a small surveillance camera above the door.
Nelson said this is the first child sex slavery case he's dealt with in his 21-year career with the sheriff's department.
"I'm not aware of any cases that are similar to this at all," he said.
Buschow said the girl's rescue was an example of schools and law enforcement working together as intended.
"There are so many ways this could have slipped through the cracks," he said.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about Barth to call the East County Sexual Assault Unit at 494-8201.

Some don't believe in waterboarding - well the shoe fits perfect in this case.
Goodness, now i have to start my day with something to discusting as this. What this poor child has to wake up to everyday is beyond me.
God, please keep her close to your heart.

This is too hard for my brain to absorb this morning. Poor little girl. I hope she will get some help.
I would like to know who this man was. And where is this little girls parents. Was she kidnapped? If she was, I can't even imagine what her parents have been going thru as well.
Put this piece of scum in a trailer and have tie him up, for the rest of his life and throw him a little bread an water here and there. And no umm, you know what I mean.
This is terrible.

The court system protects these animals. They are given more rights and freedom than the innocent people.

He will be sent to prison where the other inmates will take care of him. Pedophiles are the lowest scum and other prisoners hate them. He will likely end up stabbed, beaten, or both.
Posted by Beachguy on September 17, 2008 at 10:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I can't imagine someone doing that to my little girl, it's sickening to think there are people out there who search for children like this. I've actually heard that if inmates know about someone who's raped, or molested a child in prison they sort of "take care" of them if you know what I mean. So if we hope just hard enough, maybe those inmates will "handle" or "take care" of this sick, deranged, psychopathic idiot for GOOD. Castration comes to mind, and might be a good alternative! Or 10 minutes alone with the dude... even better!

We need to turn to public execution of people like this. Think of how many of us will pay to see that. They could auction off the rights to shoot or pull the switch to the highest bidder. We can help the budget by making money and not paying to keep this person (I use this term as he is not yet convicted) in jail for years.

Not yet, but in 2 years when he gets out for time served he will have to register as on.
Since this is another horrible crime that only receives slaps on the wrist, I figure 2 years is about all he will get for ruining a life (lives).

Of course, the guy will probably whine and cry to the courts that he was molested as a kid or that he ate too many Twinkies or something stupid to avoid any responsibility. Sorry scumbag, there are no excuses for harming children!!!!!!!

Ugh - my heart aches for this poor girl. I can't even imagine the hell she went through. No doubt she will have quite a time recovering from her ordeal. I hope she gets all the help she needs. I wish there were something I could do to help.
As for her rapist, I hope he does life in prison. I'm against the death penalty, but in cases like this I don't think I'd cringe if I heard that was his penalty. He needs to pay for what he did to this poor girl and frankly no punishment is good enough. And, I firmly believe that there is no rehabiliting people like this.
I'm glad that the school was diligent and called authorities once she was missing. Otherwise she might still be in that creep's clutches. And, I wonder if he's her father or relative? That could be another reason he had access. And, if it is proven that her mother was involved then she should get the exact same punishment he gets!

I have no idea whether the mother of this child is a meth addict or not. Nor do we know whether she was truly involved or not. All that will come out eventually I'm sure. All that aside, I think we let so many criminals and losers off the hook by stating "meth is the devil" or alcohol is the devil, or any other drug of choice. The fact is that nobody makes someone take a drug. It's a choice. Yes, people do get hooked, some quite quickly. And I believe that addiction is a disease. However, we all still have choices. IF this mother was a meth addict and IF she was involved in her daughter's continual rape, then SHE herself is the devil, not the meth she CHOSE to take. Period. Let's not let people off the hook by blaming their drug. When that young guy killed the jogger a couple of weeks ago while driving drunk, no one was saying "alcohol is the devil." People were castigating him and the choice he made to drink and drive. We all have choices in life. Everyone makes the choice to pick up a drug for the 1st time. And, people have a choice whether or not to get help once they're addicted. I'm not immune to the effects of addiction - many in my family are/were alcoholics and some were drug addicts. I know it's hard to get off whatever substance you're addicted to. However, in my opinion NO drug can be or should be used as an excuse for someone to do something so heinous as this. Anyone who can harm a child in this way is just inherently evil.

I guessing that the same people above who are lambasting the monster in the story are the same people who bash folks who fervently have faith in their God. Not to say that all religious people are perfect, but, knowing the Lord is better than not. We need more folks turning back to their faith. Maybe that will help this sicko society we live in.
If you people knew what goes on at high school and college parties, you all would be horrified.
The devil is running roughshod over the Earth. God will be the ultimate judge someday.

the bad thing is that most of these guys get into prison and ask to be in the SNY(special needs yard)/protective custody and no one really gets a real shot at them. I wish they didn't do that and just put them in with the general population. they'll find out what real pain is i hope this guy rots in hell.

It's interesting how they are put in protective custody to protect them from others when the kids weren't protected from them.
I don't understand why we cater to the inmates. Prison isn't meant to be a fun place. It's supposed to be scary as all heck so you never want to go.

I just have a general disgust for the light penalties out there for stuff such as child molestation, drinking and driving, rape...etc.
Prison needs to be the worst fear, they need to make it a horrible place to go and never want to return. Prison is just looked at as a place for a free meal and a warm bed. We treat prisoners better than we do our own soldiers. Look at the men and women fighting for this country in the blazing heat, sleeping on the ground underneath tanks or even the vets sleeping on the streets while the animals who ruin our society are all cush with every need from food and shelter all the way to top of the line health care provided on our dime!
Take away all of their extras, I have to stop spouting off on here about this issue, it does no good. I have actually written to the Gov. about it, but I guess he has bigger fish to fry with worrying about other stuff.
I need to figure out a way to actually get some real attention on this issue! Of course the darn ACLU will cry about it while NO ONE stands up for the victims and their families!

Opns~ No, I am not crazy. Just emotional.I truly feel him dying is the easy way out for HIM. I did not say he deserves to a good life. He deserves to be punished, tortured & castrated. I do know from personal history what damage can be done! I did think about killing (or him getting the death penalty)the abuser, molester, manipulater & finally murderer that did this to my family. He still walk the streets, but what kind of life is he living.. and what kind of life would I be living if I had him "taken care of". I think torture would be better than an easy death by injection!

I have the same question a few others have asked. Why was this girl not reported missing? The mother is culpable here, despite the restraining order against this man.

Sounds like another great choice for new proposed prison in Camarillo. I will enjoy giving this guy $250,000 a year by way of taxes and nothing but the best in health care.
Will see...

silky, it's $600,000.00 per yer per inmate at the new improved prison/hospital. Just what this guy needs.
jamesgang- You don't have to justify what you wrote...it was clear. There are some commenters that "assume", go off in tangents, and accuse you of something that you didn't write. I understood your comment and I know what you're saying. He deserves to be miserable in prison. I agree.

This is a good example of why the death penalty should be in place. Not revenge, not as a deterrent, but to make absolutely certain these inhuman monsters never get the chance to do it again. Sexual predators like this cannot be rehabilitated and the money gambled to try is not worth it and will most likely be wasted.
It's too bad that it costs so much to put someone on death row. I prefer the .65 bullet price myself.
Disgusting.

I created a site at 805Vigalantes, some have asked for a site for communicating. I would like to see how this works. Please give me feedback by email, make recommendations.

Lawabider - i read somewhere that you wanted an individual site to speak without reservations. I've gone out on a tangent (as one would put it) and created a site for you and everyone else to join and participate and see how it works out. It would be in our best interest - and especially of those who have walked those shoes, men and woman alike - without prejudist to come forth and partake to help others heal from this offense. The ultimate goal would be to reach a few or more being presently violated to help them reach out, and believe in them.
Thank You.

Someone molests a child and the internet lynch mob starts making their angry "we should" posts. It's terrible, but your response is so cliche.

With my extensive personal experience with The Ventura County Sheriff ,the D.A. office and A.P.S.,V.C.B.H and finally the Board of supervisors and their tangled web I assure you that it is best to wait for the outcome of this case.So remembe, anyone can be made to look like whatever a bias and obviously self serving government portrays.
