Neighbors around Naval Base Ventura County at Port Hueneme are likely to hear gunfire for a few hours Monday morning, which will be part of a battle re-enactment.
As part of a ceremony for a newly promoted crop of chief petty officers at the base, the Navy will re-create the 1965 battle in Vietnam during which Seabee Marvin Shields performed actions that made him a Medal of Honor recipient.
Shields, a construction mechanic third class, remains the only Seabee to receive the award. He had continued to fight after being repeatedly wounded. He eventually died from his wounds.
The ceremony Monday will be with blanks and is set to begin about 6:30 a.m. and last until about 9 a.m. It will be at Dozier Field, which is near Victoria Avenue and Channel Islands Boulevard.
More information may be obtained by calling the Naval Base Information Line at 989-8786 or dispatch at 982-4591.
