Fetal alcohol disorder is focus of meeting
Screenings and other strategies to stop prenatal exposure to alcohol will be explored at a conference Friday in Oxnard.
Organized by the Ventura County Behavioral Health Department, the conference will focus on the fetal alcohol spectrum disorder that occurs in about one of every 100 births in the United States. Speakers will talk about early intervention and programs available for people with the disorder. Panelists will talk about personal experiences related to prenatal exposure.
Keynote speaker Edward Riley, a psychology professor at San Diego State University, will focus on changes in brain structure and function and related effects.
The conference is aimed at the public and healthcare professionals. It begins with registration at 8 a.m. Friday at the Residence Inn by Marriott, 2101 W. Vineyard Ave., Oxnard. Cost is $25, with a $10 fee for continuing education units.
A training session for physicians will be held Thursday night at the Marriott.

An engraved invitation should be sent to: Irene Pinkard - Oxnard High School District President, Rocky Valles Jr.- Channel Island Pricipal, Jody Dunlap - Oxnard High School District Suerintendent should be made aware of alcohol usage amoung young and the damage it causes. In a leadership role Irene and Rocky sought support from Dunlap for proveryors of beer, wine, and sprits (Fresh and Easy) within 50 feet of Channel Island High School. They said: "it will challenge the students will build character" in exchange a marquee and some other stuff ...
