An Oxnard woman suffered minor injuries Saturday night when she was shot in the face at a stoplight in Oxnard.

Patricia Mendez, 28, was a passenger in a car at Vineyard Avenue and Oxnard Boulevard about 11:15 p.m. when a unknown man approached the car and shot her in the face, according to Oxnard Police.

She was driven to St. John's Regional Medical Center, treated for a minor facial wound and released, police said.

As of Sunday, no motive was known and it was unclear whether the shooter knew the victim, police said. No arrests have been made.

Good Lord! I used to think it was fairly safe to go to the areas around Oxnard Blvd. and Vineyard Avenue, not anymore. This is so out of control. I live in Ventura, but this whole area is going downhill with Oxnard leading the way. Hope I can get out with some equity in my home before these cities turn into another Pacoima or Van Nuys.

Again, we are not getting the full story. I just can not see a person walking up to this complete stranger and shooting her in the face without a word being said and for absolutly no reason. Oxnard is bad, but it is not that bad. Patrcia isn't giving the full story! Gang related? Probably.

Isn't this the same area where Mr. Singh got shot? I think so. Wow, high_society always has the inside scoop, more info than the Star. I wonder why?

Anyway, hope the girl will be ok.

In response to vcca - It isnt like Ventura is such the wonderful place either, I mean your cheerleaders smuggled pot laced cookies to a cheer camp. Guess thats why most of the snobs in Ventura are the way they are they are too stoned to realize that there is plenty of crimes being committed in their city too. Prostitution, drug sales, murders, vehicle break ins, purse snatching.

This crime was probably committed by someone that knows the victim. Its a shame, back in the day people would argue, have thier disagreement, maybe they would get into a fist fight, and thenit would be over now if you dont like what someone is doing you just pull out a gun and think that the problem is solved instead it creates MORE problems.

I am not saying that one city is better than the other, what I am saying is that crime happens everyday it is such a shame. I dont know the answer to the problem, but I sure dont like the thought of having the criminals take over the streets while the good people live in fear wherever they are!

My family lives very close to that area in Oxnard. Growing up in Oxnard, it was such a safe area...I see what VCCA is saying. Seems to be more crime...violent crime in the area.

keeping_it_real- If you go to kvta website, they usually have descriptions of the suspects.

VC Star needs to revisit their policy on not publishing the suspect's race. The public has the right to know.

I have a feeling there is some kind of gang initiation going on. Over the weekend, my sis saw a loser flashing signs in that very same area, with no regard for who was watching. She got the h*ll out of there and drove right past. Pretty sad, these animals have zero regard for anything. I hate that I share the air with these animals.

Unfortunatly that area is mostly Apertments and Condo's which is where the poorer class who can't afford to buy a Home lives. Those are usually the ones who are in gangs(but not always). I don't think that the whole story was being told and that the victim probably did know the suspect. Also, I have read in the paper that there are just as many stabbings and robberys in Ventura as there are in Oxnard. No city in the County is safe anymore!

Posted by cast on September 8, 2008 at 8:46 a.m. (Suggest removal)

As far as Oxnard is concerned the majority of crimes are commited by 5'8 bald hispanics. When i read the paper i just assume this is the case.Let me tell you why,if it was another race that would be news in and of itself.Asian shoots ect...
I'm sure these Animals will get caught. This type loves to brag.Any normal Mother would call the police when and if she heard her son and his friends braging. But not the average Mother of an Animal. She would help him hide the gun.So if you are reading this and you are that type of mother I can only ask you what will you do When it is his turn that he pays with his life. Will you be fast to blame the police with what has taken you pieces of shyt generations to do?.I can only hope when you look in the mirrior you get the harsh reality of the role you've played!

You are all almost there. . . the radius of 1 mile of this intersection; #1) Stabbing of Victim at Hst and Bluebell, #2) Bank Robbery / Murder at Vineyard Ave and Oxnard Blvd, #3) Shooting of woman at this same intersection - What's up? Hm, let's think about this for a moment. . . Any suggestions? Other than race, gang offiliation, whether the suspect is legal or not? Your thoughts are appreciated. Could this possibly mean our domestic differences are spilling out into the public eye? Nothing to blame, just coinsidence? MM

Earlier this year we went to a new bilingual call center with an 800 number. There had been three regional numbers. Though the old numbers still forward to the new one, here it is:

Are you fricken kidding me! Walks up to the car and shoots her in the face? What in the hell is going on! That is the maybe one of the most busy intersections in Oxnard...someone had to have seen it!

I wish the Star would put more details and follow up with their stories! I really would like to know if this was a random act or if the perp knew the victim.

Off the subject, but does anyone know if the creep Jeffery Aguilar knew Mr.Singh? Or was it a random act?

I live close to where this happened. i got off work in ventura at 10:00 p.m., then i went and got gas by wal-mart and then got some groceries at food 4 less. I got home at 11:10. Thank God I wasn't around, But i never heard any thing. maybe it was cause my baby was screaming his head off when i got inside. I can't beleive how much stuff has been going on in this area lately, and it kinda frightens me because even though it seems to be that all the attackers know the victims, there is eventually going to be an innocent person in the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm glad the victim is ok and i hope they catch this person. I just hope that the victim cooperates with police to get the scum off the streets.

sorry if i confused any one with what i said. just to much to say and i type sooo slow.

this is scary, we were in that area like 20 mins before this happened. We saw many cop cars by the Q club, and figured there was a fight. We get home and on KEYT they report a shooting in that area, we just assumed that the incident happend at the Q Club. It's ridiculously scary that even at a street light you can get shot, let alone in the face! Amazing she only had minor injuries.

I would rather walk around in Oxnard than encounter one of the Pierpont "Demons" wanna be Hell's Angels. Or better yet than to frequent one of the Hell's Angels businesses on lower Main St. Like the "Red Head" sticker or anything "Red and White" isnt associated with them.
You mean you don't know your town has gangsters too?

Junior,
You are right. Too often on these boards the crime itself is diminished by the way people are quick to point out the perpetrators race. Crime doesnt discriminate like justice it is blind.

clfores - I used to live on Pierpont and the only trouble that "gang" ever got into was smoking pot, having illegal bonfires, and minor vandalism. I still live fairly close to that area and can assure you I would feel 100x safer walking through that area than nearly any part of Oxnard/Port Hueneme thanks to the individuals who seem to be contributing to the problem.

Shame it's such a pain to get a CCW -- If I was living in Oxnard, I'd certainly put forth the effort to try and get one. The criminals are clearly already armed.

Posted by ohsnap on September 8, 2008 at 2:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)

JuniorMAFIA -
Taken from: http://www.vcsd.org/faq/ccw.html
In order to obtain a CCW permit, a person must:
1. Be of good moral character (as verified by passing an interview and a thorough background investigation).
2. Show good cause why a permit should be issued.
3. Complete an approved firearm safety course.
4. Live in Ventura County or one of the cities within Ventura County or work primarily at a business located in Ventura County or one of the cities within Ventura County.

#2 is the tricky part -- This is typically at their discretion, and although you don't have to provide proof that people are "after you," to say that you simply want to protect yourself in an increasingly more dangerous city (Oxnard) typically won't convince them. I'd love to find a way to get one, and I think everyone who wants to should have the ability to be responsible gun owners with CCW's.

Guns and CCW's aside, I think the real issue here is immigration. Oxnard especially, due to the amount of agriculture --

From: http://sci.tech-archive.net/Archive/s...
The Center of Immigration Studies (CIS) has stated that many violent
crimes in the United States are committed by illegal immigrants.[25].
Because of the immigration status of the criminals, law enforcement
officials are often unable to accurately track and find many of them
as they retreat back over the border where they are often untraceable
and/or not extraditable. Persons apprehended while attempting to
enter
the United States illegally after committing previous crimes in the
United States are indictable for the attempt to illegally re-enter
the
country.[22]

There are also numerous reports stating movement of gang activity following illegal migrant workers - something there is a large instance of in Oxnard (no doubt due to the city's large amount of agriculture). I'd be quite interested in finding out the current place of residence of the attacker, and I'd love to see a follow-up on his legal status in this country, as well as the legal status/location of his parents. As someone else stated the suspect is:
Hispanic male, 20s, 6-foot, medium build, black T-shirt.

Oxnard is deteriorating. Take a look at Colonia and tell me what you think about the city as it stands right now. The public schools are becoming crowded with anchor children who are born to believe, from looking at their own parents' lives and actions, that breaking the law is how you get what you want, and much of the county is being pulled down. There are areas in the city (as I pointed out), where you wouldn't dare go late at night, especially if you're white. The intersection where this occurred is actually quite close, and it doesn't surprise me.

News organizations owe it to their readers and viewers to dig deeper in stories, or at least provide follow up reports, on the legal status of those committing these crimes.

Latina_805 - Let's find out if the suspect involved was an illegal immigrant.

Also, why remain anonymous? Do you have something to hide/were you affiliated in some way with the shooting?

high_society -
"Entering the country illegally (which I am against) is also way different than causing harm to another individual."
It's no different than any other monetary harm, i.e. theft.

"That sounds like someone who has a legal job, not necessarily an illegal."
His legal status has not yet been revealed, but there are many ways of acquiring "new" vehicles without having proven citizenship in the U.S.

Latina805 - I would never be so naive to think crime did not exist before illegal immigration. To say you're color blind to crime is equally naive. It is a known fact that there is an influx of crime as a direct result of illegal immigrants coming into the country, many with previous criminal records.

If you have an infection from a wound, you need to clean it, and bandage it, as well as take antibiotics. You don't take the antibiotics while leaving the wound open and dirty, allowing any number of things into it. Right now countless criminals are entering the borders, and to say that they alone are responsible for crime would be careless at best, but they are a contributing factor, especially in an agricultural city such as Oxnard, and it is an important issue that needs addressing. We can't clean up this town if we've left the door wide open for more criminals to come in.

Posted by ohsnap on September 8, 2008 at 3:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

JuniorMAFIA - "It is illegal activity, hence the name 'illegal immigration', is it the same as shooting someone in the face or stabbing someone to death? not at all. You kind of proposed a weak argument."

Never mind the fact that many of those illegal immigrants have committed/will commit violent crimes, on top of breaking the law. They're not all "harmless" non-violent individuals coming here to work, and every day many more individuals with prior criminal records are coming across the border.

"so, unless you are a gangbanger or just in the line of fire, you have nothing to worry about."
So just avoid being anywhere where the gangmembers may decide to start shooting their guns? Looks like I'll just be avoiding Oxnard then!

"How is shooting someone the same as coming to this country?"
You do realize that many illegal immigrants are committing violent crime - crimes that should have never taken place if it were not for the fact that they were allowed to break the law in the first place?

* There are currently over 400,000 unaccounted for illegal alien criminals with outstanding deportation orders. At least one fourth of these are hard core criminals.
* 80,000 to 100,000 illegal aliens who have been convicted of serious crimes are walking the streets. Based on studies they will commit an average of 13 serious crimes per perpetrator.
* Illegal aliens are involved in criminal activities at a rate that is 2-5 times their representative proportion of the population.
* In 1980, our Federal and state facilities held fewer than 9,000 criminal aliens but at the end of 2003, approximately 267,000 illegal aliens were incarcerated in U.S. correctional facilities at a cost of about $6.8 billion per year.
* At least 4.5 million pounds of cocaine with a street value of at least $72 billion is smuggled across the southern border every year. ..
* 56% of illegal aliens charged with a reentry offense had previously been convicted on at least 5 prior occasions.
* Illegal aliens charged with unlawful reentry had the most extensive criminal histories. 90% had been previously arrested. Of those with a prior arrest, 50% had been arrested for violent or drug-related felonies.
* Illegal aliens commit between 700,000 to 1,289,000 or more crimes per year.

* The very brutal MS-13 gang has over 15,000 members and associates in at least 115 different cliques in 33 states.
* The overall financial impact of illegal alien crimes is estimated at between $14.4 and $81 billion or more per year. Factor in the crime as a result of the cocaine and other drugs being smuggled in and the number may reach $150 billion per year.

"What are you going to do? punish people for crimes they might commit someday? that is laughable at best. If you recall one of my previous comments, I never said all of them are harmless... every group of people has their idiots."

Uhhh, we could focus on preventing them from coming here in the first place. That would be the best mode of prevention. You know, the whole, illegally crossing the border thing. If we cracked down on that and deported known illegals, as well as allowed for greater cooperation between the INS and the local police departments, we wouldn't ever have to wait and see if they decide to commit further crimes :)

"cast, what happens when only one parent came here illegally? is that person prone to want to commit a crime half of the time?"
Clearly one parent has shown they have no issue with breaking the law in order to get what they want, and the other has no problem being an accomplice in said crime. That's a great message to teach your children:
"Son, when you really want something, don't go about getting it the legal way, just break the law because it's faster, and you don't have to bother learning English."

"It is NOT ok to kill people just because they are illegal."
When did I ever say that? Nice strawman.

"Your racism is not surprising. Just ignorant."
It's surprising to me, because I just found out I'm racist, apparently.

"You are fool to defend these white boys because they are white."
I would in no way defend or condone the beating or killing of any individual, regardless of legal status. What I stated was a simple fact: Had he not been here (illegally), he would not have been in that situation where he was beaten to death. That's a fact, whether you like it or not. As for these boys, I'd recommend life in prison for all 4. Crime, regardless of it's offender, requires swift and harsh punishment, as it should not be allowed or tolerated in any sense.

"How about the blatant racism against blacks in the 60's?"
What about it? It was horrible and unjust, and anyone who supports discrimination based on race is a bigot.

"How do you justify that? So, it's ok for skinheads and KKK to do things. That racism is still alive in the South."
Wow, who's justifying that?

"I don't hate any race, I hate illegal immigration, not the immigrants, or I would hate all the other people that come here from other white countries."
Yeah, I hate theft, not the thiefs! You do realize that many immigrants enter this country every year the right way, that is to say, _legally_, right?

"But I do agree with you, send them back!
Start with the Europeans!"
Now who's being racist? You do realize that the majority of _LEGAL_ immigration in the early 1900's was from Europe, right?

"If those idiots were tolerant they wouldn't have killed.

Fools."
Yeah, I agree, and you've basically created a straw man argument saying that I'm somehow defending them. That's pretty ignorant if you ask me.

The article clearly states that it occurred on Oxnard/Vineyard, and that the perpetrator was a hispanic male. It's not a stretch to speculate as to his legal status, or discuss legal citizenship and it's relation to the occurrence of violent crime in Oxnard.

"If by legal you mean they slaughtered people to get the land, ok then."
Nice. How about you go deep into South America if you're unhappy with the life Europeans have brought to this land.

"I'm just saying that you are blaming illegals for this story that most likely was not a random act. And by doing so, then I'm going to blame Europeans for starting it."
To say that it's highly possible that the suspect is an illegal alien, as well as address the issue of many more illegals committing violent acts in this area is not a stretch in discussion. To bring up Europeans and lump them into a giant group of murderers when, after I mentioned, countless Europeans came here legally through an already established legal immigration process, is rather ignorant.

Well i would say he is still being taught to break the law,and mommy has very poor judgement to be with daddy who is ILLEGAL..Sorry but those are my views. So yeah mijo is prone to break the law and try and get away with it.

No. I'm lumping all illegals with criminals - which they are - because they're breaking the law entering this country. If even 1 illegal immigrant ends up being a child molester, that's 1 too many, as not one of them should have been here in the first place.

Here you go baby bird:
"...that means there are 2,158 murders committed annually by illegal aliens – crimes that never would have happened if they weren't here. This is part of the collateral damage of tolerating illegal immigration.

Note that at 2,158 murders that would be 15.3% of all the murders reported by the FBI, which would be about three times the representation of illegal aliens in the general population."

"Yes, snap, because UNLIKE you, I am a proactive individual, and I don't sit here and complain on the posts all day like you.

Crime has no time restraints, so therefore, why don't you become pro-active instead of complaining who you think the Vigilantes are. We are caring people who chose to support local PD, etc and further information that the Star does not supply us with. And tryng to round up tipsters and so forth. Hoping that this site will be used as a non-stressor type website to tipping. If you can't understand that. Then pity you.

ohsnap, highsociety is probably one of the most outspoken individuals about criminals and illegal immigration. high society is a she, and from what i read, she's hispanic. i think for her to say she is against illegal immigration is hard. i'm hispanic myself and i get called many things when i myself say it's a problem. but like juniormafia said, you can't provide the stats from crimes vs residents. i will await that link from a reputable resource.

"ohsnap......I'm surprised you haven't said that Patricia Mendez is probably here illegaly too and therefore she basically deserved to be shot because, of course, if she didn't come here in the first place she would have never been shot."
'Deserving' and 'as a result of' are two different things. If she's here illegally, then yes, had she not broken the law to come here, she would not have gotten shot. Where's the problem with this line of thinking? You're mistaking my statement for something rather malicious when it's simply meant to convey the fact that, had it not been for that individual disregarding the law by entering the country illegally, he personally would be alive. That's not to say those four low-life's wouldn't have found some other excuse to beat up/kill a minority, which I'm sure they would have, and they ought to rot in prison.

"you can't provide the stats from crimes vs residents. i will await that link from a reputable resource."
If you read the study, you'd see that those numbers were estimated based on criminal data from various reputable sources. However, the empirically sound, indisputable and 100% accurate statistics you're seeking simply don't exist, because, well, those illegals are hard to track. That's how they made it here :)

Quite frankly, though, even 1 crime committed by an illegal alien should not have ever occurred as they should not have been here in the first place.

Regardless, it's evident to me that Oxnard has been going downhill for a while, and will continue to do so thanks to our state's (and the city's) policies, or lack thereof, regarding immigration.

Here's a statistic: 100% of illegal immigrants have committed a crime on U.S. soil.

"Volunteer chain gangs
Shortly after taking office, Arpaio reinstituted chain gangs, a form of inmate labor that had been virtually eliminated in the United States. According to Arpaio, his chain gangs are not a form of punishment, but of rehabilitation."

Right On!!
This is what we need in California!!
Maybe this will speak loudly to the parents of California. Hold certain type of parents responsible by chain ganging them too.
Inmate injuries - let the families pay for medical. Your on chain gang and break your angkle - let family pay for it. Sounds reasonable to me.

How come nobody ever talks about why illegal immigrants come to the United States. Sure they don't have the resources, but why don't they have the resources? A major contributor is the heavily subsidized U.S. agriculture. So US farmers can sell their corn at a much lower rate than Mexican small farmers, and through NAFTA, this makes everything a lot easier. So they can't make a profit so they come here. If you want to cut back on illegal immigration, then protest for more equal trading systems. If you don't like the effects of neoliberalism, then don't promote it.

805Nana_1...I was half-way kidding but one thing that I do like about him is that he doesn't seem so concerned with always being politically correct.

On top of being a huge problem, illegal immigration is complicated. First we need to stop the bleeding and tighten up our borders and then figure out what to do with the millions of illegal immigrants who are already here.

I hope that our next President is up to the task.

Ohsnap here's a statistic

The United States has overhtrown 14 governments the last 110 years because their rule of government didn't fit their views.

The mostly US funded IMF, funded by you taxpayer, has sunk countries deeper into poverty through the structural adjustment loans.

All I am saying is that everybody should be held accountable. Just as illegals committed crimes for entering the country, the United States needs to be held accountable for crimes the have committed abroad, in other countries soils. And well, sometimes their actions has led to illegal immigration.

Honestly though, I've lived here since the early 70's and in all of my time driving around, have never seen anyone shot at an intersection. Obviously it happens, but it's not like there is constant gunfire in the streets.

Freedom1, What a RACIST, IGNORANT & ASININE thing to say! Criminality has NOTHING to do w/ the rich Hispanic HERITAGE, or any other groups' cultural traditions.
Every ethnicity & race has their bad people & good people. NO group advocates violence. There are just bad apples everywhere, amongst all groups of people, all over the world.

CharliesMom - why is what is said "RACIST, IGNORANT & ASININE thing to say?" This tragic event occurred in Oxnard - the home of the month long Hispanic cultural celebration. It simply was a connection to the violence in that community - the highest in Ventura county - with a celebration of the culture of the majority of the residents. It also has a large population of those here illegally and working in jobs that leaves them living below the poverty level. Where there is poverty and crowding, there is violence, regardless of race. One good reason for enforced immigration laws. Enjoy the celebration and be safe.
