Oxnard Vons location briefly evacuated

An Oxnard grocery store was evacuated briefly this morning after an electrical box in the store shorted out, causing sparks, authorities said.

Firefighters responded about 6:30 a.m. to a report of a fire at the Vons near the intersection of Victoria Avenue and Wooley Road, said Battalion Chief Mike O'Malia of the Oxnard Fire Department.

When they arrived, firefighters determined a short in an electrical box had caused sparks and an electrical odor.

About two dozen customers and store employees were evacuated for about 15 minutes while firefighters dealt with the electrical problem before turning it over to store management, O'Malia said.

No injuries or serious damage were reported.
