Camera in hand, Ellen Potter strolled down Main St. of Ventura to complete an assignment given by teacher Phyllis Doyon of Doyon Studio & Gallery in Camarillo. The assignment: take at least forty or more photographs of businesses in a small city or town with history. Then narrow those down to twenty and bring them to class for discussion. From those photos select the one that was "talking to her", adjusting the image to create a center of interest, a working subject, color and good values. The photo of Calico Cat Books in Ventura was the one Ellen chose to paint. Meticulous for detail, Ellen created her painting called "Calico Cat Storefront" taking artistic license to change the awning color from green to blue. You can see the smallest details in her painting of the books and magazines in the store front. This image was selected as a favorite by her fellow classmates. Phyllis's students collected hundreds of storefront images of Camarillo, Simi Valley, Santa Paula, Oxnard, Ojai, Fillmore, Moorpark and Ventura for their assignment. The project then went onto painting more variations of the same photo, making lines to point to the center of interest, creating the painting in abstract, all together, a total of six different ways of painting the same subject.

Ellen lives in Ventura and has been a student of Phyllis Doyon for seven years. Using favorite earth tones, blues and teals, she covers the paper creating passionate images in her floral, landscape and still life paintings. Her love of power boating around the local Channel Islands and snow skiing in the mountains provide her with subject material "she likes", a necessity for what she paints. Her two daughters and two sons are appreciative of her artistic talent ---"wanting everything she has painted".

She has participated in "SPLASH" art shows numerous times and is joining the other forty student artists who are working together in this years SPLASH 2008 "A Breath of Plein Air" at the Thousand Oaks Community Gallery now through the remainder of September. Watercolors --matted and framed, mono prints, collages, acrylics and cards are presented for viewing and purchase. Ellen invites everyone to the gallery to visit and enjoy all of their artistis talents.
