Rally focuses on immigration, environment

Speakers demand legal path to citizenship, peaker plant stopped

Labor union and environmental supporters gathered at Oxnard High School on Sunday afternoon where they made a series of demands, including providing a path to legal citizenship for the roughly 12 million undocumented immigrants now living in the United States.

"We believe that everyone here, we're all God's children," speaker Soledad Ruiz of Oxnard told a crowd of more than 150 people inside the school's gymnasium. "We believe that we can be better together than apart."

The event, billed as "United for Action: Faith, Values and Democracy," was organized by community groups including La Hermandad, Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy and Arts for Action.

Those present also demanded that the California Coastal Commission hold a hearing in Oxnard on a 45-megawatt peaker power plant being proposed for construction in the seaside city by Southern California Edison.

Edison said it needs the power station to help prevent blackouts during periods of peak demand, including summer. The plant would generate enough power for nearly 30,000 households.

But many people in this largely Latino city feel the plant needlessly subjects them to toxins and other contaminants. They say the city already is doing more than its fair share by being home to two other large power plants.

"It sounds to me as an example of environmental racism," Julie Peña told the crowd. "They could build the plant in any other part of the country."

Said Jon Ziv, a local dentist: "Let's not let them build the plant here."

Ziv then called Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, D-Santa Monica, to the stage, asking that she support efforts to keep the plant out of Oxnard.

"I will fight with you to make sure that plant is not sited here on our coastline," Brownley said.

Speakers also demanded that the Environmental Protection Agency do more to protect Oxnard residents from the toxic mess left by Halaco, a bankrupt metals recycling plant that closed its doors in 2004.

"We fought extremely hard to get Halaco to shut down," Oxnard Mayor Tom Holden told the crowd. "But that was only half the battle; we have to fight to get it cleaned up."

The Halaco site has been largely abandoned since the EPA completed its initial stabilization of the site.

Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, was called to the front of the stage and asked how she felt about the Halaco site.

Capps promised to do everything to clean up the site immediately.

"Nationally, people of color are three times more likely to die of asthma and other respiratory ailments" caused by pollution, she said.

"For far too long the government has disregarded the health of minorities, and this is wrong," Capps said.

On the issue of immigration reform, Alicia Flores, director of Hermandad Mexicana, an immigrant rights group, said too many hardworking immigrants are being pursued as if they were criminals and are terrified of "the terrorism of deportation."

Flores appealed to legislators that they pass immigrant-rights legislation under which immigrants will be afforded the same legal protections as U.S. citizens.

Capps denounced the persecution of immigrants, saying it goes against one of the basic tenets of this nation that it be a land of opportunity for anyone willing to work hard.

"America's diversity (has always been) one of our greatest strengths," she said, noting how immigrants have come to this land for centuries in search of a better life for themselves and their children.

Give me a break!!! Give them the same protection we would get if we were in thier country!

Our country is in crisis! Be here legal, pay taxes and support this country, or go home.

I was at the rally and there were about a thousand people there. On the main floor were 20 rows of 16 chairs, with people in them, which makes 320 people, plus at least that amount on both sides of the stadium seating, which would be about 1,000 people. Please, that was a lot of work to get that many people there.

Noticeably absent were the Board of Supervisors from Ventura County. Don't they care about protecting the coast from ugly, polluting development? Don't they care about the youth of Ventura county? Don't they care about the undocumented residents keeping the economy and agriculture of the county thriving? Shouldn't these workers have some sort of protections for their contributions? Some legal papers? Something at all?

There are many legal immigrants living here in the US. They did what they needed to do the right way. I have no problem with that. If you are here illegally you are illegal. This means you broke the law. What part of this don't you understand?

If those of you came in the this country by doing what you should have done in the first place, you wouldn't be having this problem right now.

Illegal aliens have no rights in our country. Go back to your countries and get in line with the law abiding people who are going through the process!! I have no need for "Illegal Aliens" in my back yard...the power plant is needed for the people in your area. No one else will benefit. Here in Arizona if you don't have legal immigrant status you don't work. Plain and simple...break the law you will have to pay the price. Coming into our country without proper authorization is ILLEGAL!!! I feel sorry for the children they brought here when they were little children and they have to be deported, but I do not feel sorry for the adults who willfully broke the law by coming into our country illegaly. If you have an anchor baby here, that baby and it's mommy must leave! In Arizona there is a push to amend the 14th amendment...that at least one parent has to be a citizen of the the USA before their child is considered a citizen.

If we tried to go into their countries and "rallied" we would probably be shot. When I was growing up in the 50's they had Border Patrol trucks everywhere, they would run after the illegals. Being American of Mexican heritage I never felt racially profiled. If you didn't run they didn't chase you. Being an illegal alien is a Felony.

On another note---Our political leaders don't give a crap about ANYBODY. It doesn't matter what race your are !!! All they care about is lining their own pockets.

I don't understand why this power plant is a racial issue. It is a people issue !!!!!

Unfortunately the most successful method of causing illegals to self deport, or stay home in the first place has been the downturn in our economy. Seems the low skill, low education jobs are the first to go. Maybe the economic troubles will last long enough for the gov't to finally put effective policy in place. Well, I can dream anyway. I fail to see the connection between illegal immigration and the other issues in this article. Well, other than the fact that Mexico is the same eco disaster and exploiter of workers that most 3rd world countries are. Maybe they should move their activism down there.

Good! Most of us here AGREE that aliens are welcome in America LEGALLY... I can't get over the utter arrogance it must take to come to another country and DEMAND RIGHTS! What a crock is that? I would never, ever presume to take rights in any other country. Close our borders, take care of who we already have HERE, then worry about letting more come in. How simple is that?

Wow, I'm surprised that the politicians at the event told the crowd what they wanted to hear... that they would help them with their causes. That's a first. Now when they leave and go back to their cozy offices do you really think they will give a damn? Only if someone gives them a lot of money.

"demand" was the wrong word to use with me. I resent use of that word almost as much as I resented seeing the Mexican flag being carried by illegal aliens who were demonstrating to "demand" a path to citizenship.

If you know a business that employs illegal aliens, call the following ICE hot line number to report such criminal activity.

1-866-DHS-2-ICE
1-866-347-2423

Your damn right McCain and Obama won't do anything about it. Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution party is the only canidate I have heard of who will solve this problem. He has my vote.

"By sealing the borders and by cutting off the money supply to illegal aliens, the problem of illegal immigration would dry up. As it is, we have no idea how many potential terrorists--not to mention violent gang members such as MS-13--have snuck (and are sneaking) through our borders.

"There will be no "path to citizenship" given to any illegal alien. That means no amnesty. Not in any shape, manner, or form. I would not allow tax dollars to be used to pay for illegal aliens' education, social services, or medical care. As President, I would end birthright citizenship for illegal aliens. There would be no "anchor babies" during my administration. "

If the Bush administation would have started clearing out all the illegals and securing the borders right after 911, we would be in a much better position today. Illegals have no right to demand anything in this country and are very lucky we give them anything. I struggle to put food on the table while I see the illegal pregos getting all their wic (FREE) food. They tax the system each and everyday. Makes me sick. Our political leaders are worthless.

Posted by marketrealist on October 13, 2008 at 9:22 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Illegal immigration is a problem, but not the main one we face. I think the hysteria has a large component driven by fear of things different. Yes, we need to ensure that our borders are secure but on the other hand, its great if we could require a second language in schools and embrace the richness of diversity that immigrants bring to our country.

The people who allowed this to happen on PUBLIC PROPERTY should be thrown in jail for aiding and abetting criminal activity.

dumpsterr - Your statements are so very true. That is exactly why Oxnard is in the state it is in now. I and my family are some of those very people that "uprooted" our lives to find decent education (in English!) and neighborhoods silent to the sound of weekly gunshots elswhere!

ReadMyLipsNoTaxes - "Why was this held on a public school campus? OUR tax dollars paid for this campus!" That was exactly my thought when reading about this event.

ImMadAsHellAndNotGoingToTakeItAnymore - "By definition illegal aliens are criminals." Yeah, so where were the authorities to enforce the "law" while so many "illegals" were in this "public" meeting place?

DML - "I was at the rally and there were about a thousand people there." Refer to my above comment!

What is so hard about this? Webster has even put it in black and white:

Legal: of or based on law; permitted by law
Illegal: Prohibited by law; against the law

Posted by kelly13 on October 13, 2008 at 10:19 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Illegal immigrants need to stop "demanding" anything. They have no rights in this country. There rights are in their own country. And if you are "hiding in the shadows of fear", stop having so damn many rallies and making so many demands. Asking for something and "demanding" it are two different things and that is a big part of the problem.
When all else fails, play the race card. The enviromental issues have nothing to do with race. That is really stretching it.
Illegal immigration isn't even mentioned by McCain or Obama and it should be one of the first things they address. Illegals are connected to so many of our problems and the politicans think if they ignore it, we will forget that fact.
Ain't happening here. Keep up the fight to enforce our laws, secure our borders and build the fence...NOW.

just_a_thought, you got it right

They are 'demanding' rights.
I say we 'demand' some things in return.

The ability to speak English.
The ability to pass a high school equivalency exam.
The ability to show how they are going to benefit our society.

I am against 'amnesty' because they are, for the most part, a drain on our society.

Now this is a crock. Let's talk about the illegals inside the prison system draining our tax dollars. They didn't cross the border to "work hard". They came here to commit crimes and victimize our community.

Let's also talk about the quality of life that has been minimized because of illegal immigration. I can't stand groups like these..It is pure disgust!

If all the illegals were forced to leave, do you think there would still be a shortage of schools? Go back to where you came from.

I think the language of success is likely Chinese right about now.

Neither candidate is likely to do much about illegal immigration because there are much bigger issues at hand and it is a localized problem that is not really widespread across the country.

If you want to stop the influx, penalize the employers. Seriously folks.....penalize them harshly. Or better yet, make them responsible for housing, schools and medical care.

Those who are hear illegal are hear for a better life.... If you all really believe that we are hear to commit crime and not hear for the right reasons then you all are wrong....In public or at my house I also have the right to speak what ever language I decide...My kids speak both Spanish and English... coach04, my husband just returned from a week helping the Border Patrol. He is a memeber of the Minute Men, one of the founding members was a TexMex! You have the right to speak any language you want, don't expect the government/busnesses/schools or anything else to reply in kind. English is the language of commerce and it is the official language of the United States. I get upset when I see all these pamphlets in bi-lingual verbage. I am also fluent in spanish but english is my first language.
I realize that the illegals are coming here for a better life, no one says it isn't better, just come here LEGALLY!!! When you become a citizen of the Untied States you must read and write english before you are able to apply for citizenship. This is one reason why we should amend the 14th amendment and remove the anchor baby rights..these should apply only when one parent is a citizen.

Like I said, since you have been schooled by the government educational system, you read, write and speak english, I don't think that is much to ask of all our citizens!

I realize that there are illegal aliens from all nations, we took a trip this summer up the East coast, and saw alot of different nationalities speaking different languages, but when they communicated with a business owner, guess what, they spoke English! Anyone in this country that does not speak English...guess what...they are not citizens. Requirement Numero Uno...must read, write and speak English.

Coach04

You need to go back to school, it is obvious you did not pay attention. I hope your Spanish grammar skills are better than your English.

"...First of all my parents where hear illegal."

You are here because of a loophole in the law called the 14th amendment. Read about it some time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourteen...

".. believe that we are hear..."
Huh? I can't hear you. It is HERE, not HEAR

"... not hear for ..." Again HERE no HEAR

"... I also have the right to wave a Mexican/American flag....."
You do what? Wave an American flag or a Mexican flag? This may make since in Spanish but it doesn’t in English.
If you are waving a Mexican flag it shows your allegiance to Mexico, not to America.

"..There first language is Spanish..."
It should be "THEIR"…. <sigh> I digress, your poor English bugs me but your attitude is what is wrong with the Mexican immigrant.

-You don't value education, look above for examples.

-You don't respect the American culture, you wave a Mexican flag.

- Lastly you are doing a disservice to your children by forcing Spanish as their primary language in a country (and world) that speaks English.

- I just hope they pay more attention in the ESL class than you did so someday they can be a productive member of this AMERICAN society.

coach04, you are right, I would help anyone who was in need. True there are haters...but this kind of people will hate anyone and anything that they don't understand. I do have strong views on illegal immigration. I have been to the border and have seen the people in line to get their visas and it is not fair to them that there are people crossing the border illegaly. Not to mention the people that take advantage of them by charging a great deal of money to escort them over here. Now those are the people that need to be prosecuted. They promise to take them to a safe house than hold them hostage. The employers that hire the illegals are also benefiting, they too should be prosecuted, paying less than minimun wage. They pay them cash and save bundles of money by not giving them any benefits. It's a vicious cycle.

The problem is with Mexico and it's corrupt government! (Keep in mind that all the other illegals, not of Mexican heritage come from corrupt governments too) You can't protest in any of these countries...the people have no rights!

Another problem is the educational system! My opinion is that they are holding back the kids by teaching them bi lingual education. Immersion would work best, kids brains are like sponges! Coach when you went to kindergarten did you know how to read? I know I didn't, so it would not have mattered what they taught us we would learn it. The Arizona educational system no longer offers bi lingual education and the kids of all heritage are doing great! Kudos to all the people who go to night school to learn English!

Giving undocumented workers (that's politically-correct-speak for illegal aliens) the means to obtain legal status would defeat the puprose of having illegal aliens to begin with.

If they can work here legally, they sure as hell ain't gonna pick fruit and vegetables. There are much easier, better paying jobs, like landscaping and construction jobs, available. It's bad enough that the increased border security has forced farmers to allow crops to go to seed because of a lack of workers to pick them. Last year I watched a whole field of bell peppers go from green to yellow to red to lying on the ground rotting, and this year it was about five acres of artichokes that ended up getting plowed under. Someone has to pick them, and I know it's not going to be YOU!

Posted by Freedom1 on October 13, 2008 at 2:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)

iam_caine - what are you talking about? There are guest worker programs in place to bring in seasonal workers. They have been in place for years. However, as long as it's cheaper to hire an illegal alien to pick your crops, the grower will never use technology to develop automated processes to do this work. I understand some of it is already in place, but rarely used. I love our agriculture heritage so much that I'd be willing to pick crops if it meant that my grandchildren could once again go to a school that teaches in English, where you can walk the streets of your neighborhood without fear of being shot by a gang member, where you could get a job or college entrance based on your qualifications and experience and not your race, where we no longer use hypens to define our cultural heritage and we recognize each other based on on deeds and not the color of our skin.

I did point out the issues. I am sorry I used you as an example. I pointed out your ATTITUDE is what I have a problem with. "your attitude is what is wrong with the Mexican immigrant." Heck I didn't even use the politically incorrect term 'illegal immigrant'.

You don't want to be an American you want to be a Mexican living in America.

Sorry but this country was not made great by Mexicans living in America. Surely the Mexcians with your attitude will contribute to its downfall.

We need to implant "visa chips" in order to track them...physical "visa chips". Guest worker program is in affect, but because they come here legally they get legal wages.

In corporate America most jobs require certain qualifications. In my field we had 100 question test, along with 3 person board interview.

I haven't been impressed with a preidental canidate since Perot, he was the last one who spoke about the debt, not the deficit. It is 'the debt' (both private and public) that is bitting us in the butt now.

Clinton did an ok job but he never had to make any tough decisions.

Bush had to make some tough decisions but he lacked the judgement to make good decisions.

Obama has never made any decisions.

For the last 20 years McCain has just went along for the ride and the few things he did push for I don't agree with ... IE. Mccain/Kennedy...

The Star conspicuously omitted any mention of the speakers supporting the controversial DREAM Act. Gee, perhaps that oversight was intentional by the writer.

As for the subject of immigrants:

This country was founded on the principles of legal immigration. I have no problem with other countries' citizens who come to the US legally and become US citizens. Of course, back in the day becoming a US citizen required learning English and renouncing the mother country and pledging full support and loyalty to the US. That doesn't happen now.

Illegal immigrants ARE criminals, as they commit illegal invasions on the federal sovereignty of the United States of America. Think about it. If there's a high-speed chase, the fleeing suspect who attempts to cross the Mexican border is shot or severely injured. Non-Mexican citizens are not allowed to own property in Mexico, while the majority of sub-prime "victims" in this country are illegal aliens who knew exactly what situation they were entering into.

People can and do criticize President Bush, but the next President, whoever he may be, will be more lax than President Bush. If Obama's elected, then taxes WILL increase because there's a multi-billion dollar spending package coming down the pike for social programs (read: welfare and immigrant assistance). It won't pay for people to work hard, because they're going to get screwed in the end. Literally.

Now, as to the peaker plant:

I live in Oxnard. I'm Caucasian. Yes, I know. You can all fall over in shock now. :) I suffer from asthma and allergies, so does that mean I'm being discriminated against. Latinos cannot claim discrimination for the entire city of Oxnard, because Oxnard is multi-ethnic. Perhaps our county is being discriminated against, if we recollect the controversial radar tower placement in Ojai, the recent LNG fiasco and the current prison hospital conflagration.

If the community groups want more people actively involved, perhaps they should consider making it a community fight against Edison instead of focusing on the Latino plight. As I said, I'm Caucasian. I'm not rich. Does any member of those "community" groups want to assist me? I highly doubt it.

MadAsHell, I am married to an Old White Guy, if he used derogatory names to any racial group I would be upset. We worked for over 31 years and no "trash" stole any of our jobs. Only the qualified took our jobs. Sometimes affirmative action was blamed for promoting those less qualified, but you still had to be in the top 5. Affirmative action should be abolished, pick the number 1 on the list, top guy get the job. I do feel that the "white guy" (as you call yourself, I don't like that either) is now a minority in some respects, you have to look at the driving force behind these special interest groups...alot of them are white!

I am not one to place blame on people simply because a certain race has committed a crime against us. I do believe in racial profile and do not believe in political correctness...I just don't like racial slurs..You can be mad, as I am sometimes, but name calling only lessens your argument.

California has been speaking Spanish much longer than English. You live in Spanish country. Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Fransisco, San Diego, Ventura. Maybe your too stupid to understand this, but Ill try. You live in a state that once was part of Mexico. Just because the U.S. bought (stole) the land, and agreed to give Mexicans rights to go back and forth from Mexico, does not mean that the people, ways, or languages need to be replaced.
If your too stupid, or ignorant to accept the traditions or colture that has been here for hundreds of years, you have no place in California. Go back to Europe, Asia, Africa, or where ever you brought your bigot attitude from.

This isn't about race for so many people. It's about what is legal and what is illegal, hence the word ILLEGAL Immigrant. The people who are waiting their turn to enter this country correctly are simply being slapped in the face by those who believe they are above the law and above waiting their turn. Those are the same people who are here demanding rights and services while the ones who wait in line come in and are willing to work hard and are proud to live in America.

ImMadAsHellAndImNotGoingToTakeItAnymore

If you read, you can see that one provision with the agreement with Mexico was to allow Mexicans to continue to travel, work, live in California. This was a rule WE made.

By the way Im white, and I think that a lot of Mexicans abuse our system, but I also see whites, blacks, asians, etc. abuse the system. If the system is too easy to abuse, then we should re-work the system. IE immigration reform.

I married a Mexican citizen we have children born here in the United States. We have tried for 4 years now to get her Visas and Citizenship worked out, but the system does not allow us (I make too much money {72K}, If I was poor or disabled I could use that hardship to justify having my wife stay legally) So she is illegal, not because we didn't try, not because we broke any laws, not because we are bad people, but because the system sucks. Ive already spent thousands of dollars to try to do everything legally. Its no wonder immigrants don't bother, It is expensive, takes forever, and I still have not made any progress, and honestly am ready to just give up, because the INS is a joke, just as bad as code enforcement in Oxnard (Code enforcement says that 25,000 people live in garages in Oxnard, but then they don't do anything to enforce it)

We make it so easy for Mexicans to cheat and steal because we don't enforce our laws internally. If migrants could not find cheap garages to share with other families, I wonder how many would try to live in this expensive state.

holdeon, I believe the Native Americans where here first. The Spanish Catholics tried to "civilize" them...better term than "steal" their land. I am glad "WE" purchased this land from Mexico, once corrupt always corrupt, Mexico that is. Look what Mexico has done with the land we did not "steal" from them. I still say we should have a Revolucion! take all of it, this way all of the illegals would already be in America! Let's make Mexico the 51st and 52nd states. You keep forgeting that the fight would be quick, since Mexico has their army at their southern border, to keep THEIR ILLEGALS out!

Coach, I respect you, your ideas, your ideals and I don't care about your grammar...you make your point and I respect you for that. You have the gumption to come here and deal with the masses. Just keep in mind the point, it is that I will welcome all legal immigrants..it's just the illegals I don't welcome. I used to work for an immigration attorney, one of the requirements of the application was that the immigrant would not be a financial burden to the Federal Government of the USA! Herb Nowlin, Esquire, if you are out there, is this still true?

holdenon_2000 - I have never argued that Spanish, spoken by the Spainards who conquered and "stole" this land from the Native Americans, isn't a great part of the history of this land. At one time we lived in peace, side-by-side. Part of America's greatness used to be it's ability to assimilate cultures, traditions and languages into a common culture, still acknowledging and respecting the differences, but accepting the fact that certain commonalities were necessary to move that Nation forward, such as a common language. I realize that this is no longer true, as your post confirms. You have a nice evening.

Coach,
I am Mexican/American as well. But I do NOT share your views at all. I can only be proud of those that want to be here legally, work, pay taxes and not take advantage of the system.
I do have to say the most important factor is to have respect toward all people living in this Country. Where is the respect when all of the Hispanic gangsters are shooting at people, tagging our walls and fences, robbing and stealing. Not to say that all other races don't participate in this but the statistics show proof that the majority of crime is committed by our one and only race, Hispanics.
How can you be proud of that? Why is it that you attack those that want a better community, free from gang activity, spanish speaking, loud bumping cars etc...? I can go on and on about how some people live but I won't go there.

I am with coach on "we are all God's children", stick to the facts. Europeans are people too!!! Look at our society. I am not saying that a European brain, Caucasian, which by the way includes the hispanics, are greater than others but I think the American Heart is what makes us great. A combination of the desire to be free gives us inventiveness, perseverance, boldness, etc. all the atributes that made this nation great! It takes all races, caucasoid, mongoloid and negroid to make our country great! Look at all the other nations...which is the greatest? WE ARE! All I ask is that we become citizens legally.

This is the greatest country that civilization has ever produced. My indigenous ancestors would approve some of the changes that were made in the name of progress but would be outraged at others.

Indiscretions that were committed committed in the past to not justify the flagrant disregard of our nations laws and boarders. The illegal activists ignore this premise and shout 'racism' anytime someone stands up to them.

Johnmuir96 there is no such thing as anchorbabies anymore, Mexicans can not use their children to gain visas here, nor can my wife who happens to be a mother and married to an American Citizen.

IMMIGRATION REFORM IS NEEDED. Our economy depends on the buying power of Latinos. If this was not true then you would not see "Spanish Laguage" commercials during "English Televised" American Football games. Our companies want cheap labor and Mexicans fill that void, while adding much more to our economy, than is "cheated from our system". I agree we need to be sure the workers are paying taxes, following our laws, and living honest respectful lives. Lets do this by allowing them to get work visas easily (proof of income, birth cert. from Mexico to prove identity, and health physicals is all we should ask for). Once these documents are provided, then we can supply Immigrants with a Tax Payer Number, Drivers L, Auto Insurance, etc.
I don't care if they were here illegally to begin with because they came to work, put money in American pockets, and be shunned upon by they people whom they serve.

Once again people...get ready...let's get a REVOLUCION together and take Mexico..we can get rid of the corrupt government!

Speaking of corrupt governments...Please help me Lord!!! What is going on with our own government? This bail out has me really, really, mad. There is a revolt here in Arizona, that whomever voted for the bailout will not be voted in! McCain...turn coat voted for the bail out..so did Obama. I am only voting for McCain because of the war in Iraq! Strategicaly speaking we need to be there!
Anyhow, this is about illegal immigration...if you guys want the illegals to reside in our fair country vote McCain....Remember the McCain/Kennedy Comprehensive Immigration Bill...AMNESTY..anyway you look at it...that's what it is! If they want to do that...build the FENCE first.

If we don't enforce our laws (which I agree...we don't...yet)then why is it that other groups don't take advantage of us? Everyone has the opportunity to commit crimes but only one group seems to be doing it continually. And having rallies to "demand" more. The illegal immigrants and illegal sympathizers are undermining the efforts and determination of legal immigrants when they hold such rallies and make demands for amnesty. I see people saying different things.....First deport all illegals because they dont pay taxes and they take our jobs...While others pay taxes but they dont speak English....

Several years ago it wasnt hard to become legal now you pay thousands of dollars and your not guaranteed that you will become legal.

Folks Im trying to understand.....Aks johnmuir96 he had to go through the process with his wife. He already spent thousands of dollars so his wife can get her paper work.

coach04: Immigrants learning English (the official language of California, I might add), is for the benefit not only of those who are already citizens, but for those coming to this country. Learning English ensure that new citizens/legal immigrants will be able to effectively communicate with other citizens, allowing them to become successful in their own lives and positively affect those who already live here who will benefit from their societal contributions.

It's pretty troubling just seeing a legal citizen like coach04 spell the word "act" "acked," as well as making a number of other glaring grammatical and spelling errors. Why should people learn English if they're going to live in the United States? Well, just by reading your post I can tell you that, at the very least, they need to know it in order to be effective communicators so that their message can be fully heard.

In essence, we should all be speaking the same language, whether it's Chinese, Spanish, English, or Esperanto, so long as we're all on the same page. Given that an official language of English has been declared in a large number of states, and is the primary language spoken by an overwhelming majority of current U.S. citizens, it only makes sense that anyone else coming here learn the language. It's pretty simple, and quite honestly there's nothing discriminatory about it.

panda hats off to you for acknowleging that I have poor grammar....

Ok so my grammar is not good....I still make over six figure numbers....I'm not worried about having grammar errors because if I was I would not post my comments....You still understood me..

I am Mexican/American who will always wave both the Mexican and American Flag together...Why because Mexico is were my roots came from and America is were I live....I'm proud of both.....

coach04: You're obviously the exception, as most people making "over six figure numbers" as you so eloquently put it, rely on excellent communication skills (including proper grammar and spelling). How successful would you be if you didn't speak English, do you think?

panda this is the difference....From the age I was three until I was seventeen I lived in Foster Homes....The first three Foster Homes that I was placed inn, I was not allow to speak Spanish....As a matter of fact when I was six years old I forgot how to speak Spanish.

I didnt learn how to speak Spanish until I was twenty two years old....From the age of eighteen until the age of twenty two I was not making good money....Everyone that spoke Spanish except myself was making good money....I taught myself how to speak Spanish.....I practiced and practiced and because of that I make over thirty to fourty thousand dollars more than the person who does'nt speak Spanish....

coach04:
1.) What % of your clients are legal citizens?
2.) What % of your clients are spanish only speakers?
3.) How successful would you be if you ONLY spoke spanish?

I feel as though you're creating supply where there shouldn't be a demand in the first place, and although I respect you for learning another language to be more successful, that also supports my initial point that individuals should learn the language of the majority in order to be successful themselves and beneficial to those around them -- the only problem here is that Spanish speakers are in high demand due to a large influx of illegal immigration/lack of assimilation. The result being if I walk into some stores in downtown Oxnard, I'm going to have a difficult time ordering/communicating with the employees. This is making daily life more difficult for legal citizens as a result of the influx of illegal immigrants raising children in self-contained cultural pockets, as they didn't have to initially assimilate when entering the country. This creates hostility, confusion, and a cultural divide that shouldn't exist in the first place (as well as children who, as legal citizens, still have a poor grasp on the English language either in speaking or writing).

First we are not the INS....I can only tell you that the laws have made it difficult for someone who doesn't have legal paper work to get a loan.

Second, believe or not, many client that I come across speak very good Enlish but prefer to speak Spanish.

Your third question, I can only tell you that I thank God for allowing me to be able to speak both Spanish and English.(maybe my writing is not good but I can speak it well).....FYI, I recieved a c- in writing...I'm sure no surprise to you.

If Anahiem Ca can adaptd with the Vietnamise then I feel Ventura Ca can do the same with the hispanics.

I agree with you about the part you mentioned (children who, as legal citizens, still have a poor grasp on the English language either in speaking or writing, i,e like myself)...

But who can we blame? I dont feel the schools are putting enough effort on having our children grasp the English Language....

I'm sure your aware that California is leading the Nation among children with the English/Writing lowest scores......

coach04: Well teaching them English in school doesn't do a lot of good when they come home and their parents are Spanish speaking only. Somewhere down the line, coming into this country and not speaking Spanish is going to screw things up for someone.

Posted by kelly13 on October 14, 2008 at 7:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Coach...why do you think it is that California schools have the lowest scores on English/writing skills?
Could it be that our neighborhood schools (that we pay for) are filled with kids that speak Spanish and therefore have to be taught English. So the English speaking kids have to go to another school and pay the price for that or stay and be left behind. Either way you have kids that are behind grade level.
Oh, and while our tax dollars are paying for those kids to be in our schools that we can no longer keep our kids in, we buy them free lunches too.
So as we drive by our neighborhood school that we have lost, to go across town to a private school, that we have to work two jobs to afford, we should be ok with people who are here illegally and not speaking English taking our kids education away from them?
I know many people that have been here for 20 years or more and don't speak English. Why? Because they don't have to. And that is the problem.

Posted by coach04 on October 14, 2008 at 8:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

kelly13 I also pay lots of money for my children to attend Cathlic School...Money is not an issue for me because I dont put a price over education.

Second, the people that are here for over 20yrs and cant speak English have there own issues... I dont agree with someone who has been here 20yrs and cant grasp the English Language.

Also why do you think that everyone here is illegal? You said it yourself.

Hi All!

I'm not trying to be controversial, but I'd like to point out a few things.

1)We're all human, and therefore we all have rights. Our Constitution never sought to deprive people of rights, but to guarantee rights to all people, regardless of race, creed, religion, economic status, geography, or birth. All thinking people need to recognize that we are just one people sharing one planet.

2)Jesus, The Founding Fathers, Gandhi, Martin Luther King and others have all transgressed arbitrary, unjust laws. I suppose that makes them criminals. But think about this: any law that discriminates against human rights and human dignity is unjust, and should therefore not be obeyed. A person who wants to feed his/her family is not by definition a criminal. That person is by definition a human being, subject to the same cares, worries, and problems that we all share. Does anyone remember Jean Valjean? The protagonist of Les Miserables? He was sent to prison for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving children. Was he a criminal? I think not! As long as there is economic injustice and ill-conceived laws, the richer class will always treat the needy as criminals. I urge you to search your souls.

3) The poor and the needy always suffer from environmental injustice, and it's not because they like to live in polluted places. It's because they do not have the resources to fight or even complain because in fact they are working, all the time. Sometimes two or three jobs. Mostly the jobs that you don't want. Often in dangerous conditions. Often unaware of the dangers they face. Because they suffer from a lack of resources (time, money, education...) they often do not have the means to fight injustice the way that the rich can. It is precisely for this reason that the poorest city in Ventura County is also the most polluted. When poor people are targeted to bear the brunt of societies pollution and excesses, that is by definition social, economic, and environmental injustice.

4) To all of the people clamoring about learning a language. I would ask... How many languages do you speak? I'm a 45 year old caucasion male of British ancestry, who happens to speak Spanish. I happen to be a bilingual operator, but I confess that I speak neither language perfectly, and my Spanish is much worse than my English. I've spent over half of my life trying to be fluent in Spanish, and frankly, most days I feel like I will never fully achieve that goal. For all of you mono-lingual people crying about learning a language, try thinking about stones and people who live in glass houses.

mwills4048

So what you are saying in point 2 is that our immigration laws are unjust. ("any law that discriminates against human rights and human dignity is unjust, and should therefore not be obeyed")

What about Mexico's immigration laws? What about my personal belief that banks have been ripping everyone off, so I feel justified that I can go and take money out of these criminal institutions at gun point?

We have immigration laws on the books for a reason, they should be enforced for the betterment of the country.

mwills4048, I agree with you 100%....My family is from Mexico and I thank God for allowing my family and I to be able to live in a free Nation....I am Cathlic and my kids go to Cathlic School..

Do I disrespect the laws of the United States? NO!!! I have rights just like everyone else....Why is it that I can walk down Oxnard with a Mexican and American Flag and not get put into jail? Because its not againts the law....Why is it that I can be in any store and speak Spanish with my family and not get put into jail? Its because its not againts the law....I am not breaking any laws, yet people on this site seem to complain about what I do or dont do.....I am proud to live here...I Thank God for that everyday I wake up....

I mentioned it before and I will say it again...."We are Gods children"....When we die he will not care what language we speak or what color our skin is....

I am not a drain to society.....I work hard to feed my family and I pay taxes....I understand that not everyone does but the great amount do.

Just because something is not against the law, doesn't mean it is good for society as a whole.

It is not against the law to drive a 2 mile per gallon, 4 wheel drive, 1 ton truck as a commuter vehicle, but it is not good for our society. It increases our dependence on foreign oil.

Waving the Mexican flag is not against the law, nor is only speaking Spanish in the United States. But it goes against one of the the founding principals of E Pluribus Unum (Out of Many, One).

I will say this; I have never been told by anyone in public to speak English....If people feel so strong, why hasnt anyone said anything to me?

The only time I ever read about whats good or not good for society is when I read comments like this.

I have never had anyone tell me not to drive my 2 mile per gallon, 4 wheel drive, 1 ton truck as a commuter vehicle either. It would be rude.

Also they may be afraid I would run them over.

Where you live no one would ask you to not speak Spanish. I bet some would say you are dishonoring your heritage by speaking English. That is what is wrong. The fact so many are not blending into the American culture.

PS I *have* told people to speak English. I have had sales people speaking Spanish ABOUT ME in front of me (I am not fluent, but I do comprehend the language). Needless to say they didn't get my business.

Coach04, you work hard, pay your taxes and respect the laws of the US and the US flag. Believe it or not, those acts separate you from the people I speak about and take issue against. If you wish to fly the Mexican flag, so be it. However, since you're living within the US borders, I'd ask that you also fly an American flag, and that US flag protocol be observed and the Mexican flag be flown at a lower position to the American flag

I take issue with illegal immigrants from ANY country who come here and expect governmental agencies to provide free assistance. Yes, there are illegal immigrants who work hard. However, I disapprove of immigrants who enter the US illegally and don't work through the immigration process as set forth in US law. I absolutely disapprove of illegal immigrants, the fringe group of illegal immigrants, who protest in US streets while waving Mexican flags and hiding their faces. As I said, I do understand that their is a "fringe" group, and some of the protesters are not illegal immigrants, just anarchists attempting to hide within the immigrants' group and give the overall group a bad name.

For the record, I also disapprove of US citizens who expect welfare, housing and other assistance without giving something back. I don't think anyone should live on the government's dime, which in turn is the taxpayers' dime.

I do respect you, Coach, though others on here tend to voice more extreme views, both liberal and conservative. I tend to be more middle-of-the-road, and I wish you and your family well.

It saddens me to read such disdain and hatred from the citizens of Oxnard for their neighbors and laborers who pick their vegetables, wash their cars, serve their meals, raise their children, clean their homes . . .

I am proud to speak 2 languages and I would love to learn more. I agree that Chinese is the language of businees and success in this era that we live in, not English.

Coach...you keep missing the point. It is not about the color of your skin or what language you speak. It is legal and illegal.
How nice that you can afford to put your kids in a private school. But should you have to? What about those who can't afford it? The point is that we have lost many of our public schools to illegal immigration. And that is wrong.
I wish you wouldn't play the race card on your comments. The USA has always been a melting pot of all races and all legal immigrants are welcome. We are not a racist country. But we are a law abiding country. And illegals are not obeying or respecting our laws.

I support what you're saying. And I commend you for any and all success that you have had in this country. That's precisely what is great about the opporunities people have here.

I know people who are undocumented and serve as CFOs of companies, own businesses, etc. I bet that really makes some people on here angry, but I say more power to them for achieving their dreams!

I do agree with you that while in the US one must always raise the American Flag higher than any other flag since so many people have given there lives....I'm still thinking of going into the Reserves....

I dont believe in handouts.....I mentioned before that I was in Foster Homes from the age of three until seventeen and I never recieved handouts...I worked hard for everthing....Starting from graduating High School with honors and recieved a Wrestling Scholorship, and then graduating from the Ventura Co Reserves in 03.

I wish that so many people can express there views like you and not be so hatefull.....I also respect you and youre views...Take care and God Bless you and your family...

One last thing; I also believe that like any other race my people can bring shame to use by simply their actions.

I'm ashamed when I see Mexicans drinking and driving, and those that are here illegal some still dont obey the laws of the US....Thant I cant stand.

If you are here illegal make sure to respect the laws of the US while here....

I am not in favor of any gang members who harm anyone.

Last, I also believe that if you are on a visa and you cant respect the laws of the US then you should be deported back to your place of orgin.

As I stated before, I'm Caucasian. However, I wish some of the more extreme writers on here could grasp the concept that there are individuals of EVERY ethnic group, gender and religion who commit crime and bring shame to said group.

Am I to judge negatively all Catholics by the actions of priests who engaged in pedophilia or molestations? No. Am I to judge negatively all men because there are some rapists and domestic abusers? No. Am I to judge negatively all Whites because of skinheads and Neo-Nazis? No.

We should refrain from judging all Mexicans as illegal, just as we should refrain from referring to all women as b****** or ho**. These stereotypes are offensive. If we are going to judge anything, let's judge an individual's behavior and not an individual.
