Paralyzed CHP officer to give teen driver safety talk

This month's edition of the California Highway Patrol's Start Smart program will include a presentation from a CHP officer paralyzed last year when a driver hit him during a traffic stop.

Officer Tony Pedeferri is scheduled to speak to teens and parents Oct. 23 as part of the teen driver education program.

The free program is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the CHP's Ventura office, 4656 Valentine Road.

The program covers defensive driving, traffic laws, tips on avoiding traffic collisions and the dangers of driving under the influence.

To make a reservation, call Officer Mike Untalan at 477-4130.

Both of my kids (17 and 20) attended the Start Smart Driving program and I recommend it highly to all parents.

Tony is doing a real service talking to the kids.

As Office Untalan says - it isn't a question of it you are going to be in a collision, it is a matter of when. Be prepared and be smart.

Will Jeremy White, the drunken fool that severely injured Officer Pedeferri, be required to attend? That would certainly be appropriate.

And what a shame that Andreas Parra - the innocent driver that White smashed to death - won't be able to be there.

"it isn't a question of if you are going to be in a collision"... No, it's a question of if you are going to be the one to CAUSE the collision by being a drunken idiot.
