Green shoots 62 to lead Texas Open
Australia's Nathan Green shot an 8-under 62 on Thursday to take a two-stroke lead over Olin Browne and Paul Claxton in the Texas Open at San Antonio.
Green, winless in three seasons on the PGA Tour, birdied nine of the first 16 holes before dropping a stroke on the par-3 17th and closing with a par.
Claxton and Browne, a three-time tour winner, had bogey-free 64s in sunny and warm conditions on La Cantera Golf Club's Resort Course.
Redman, Hjorth tied at Longs Drugs Challenge: Michele Redman and Sweden's Maria Hjorth shot 6-under 66s to share the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour's Longs Drugs Challenge at Danville.
Redman and Hjorth both had seven birdies and a bogey on a sunny day at Blackhawk Country Club. In-Kyung Kim and Mikaela Parmlid were tied for second at 67.
Norway's Suzann Pettersen, a playoff winner over top-ranked Lorena Ochoa last year at Blackhawk, was two strokes back at 68 along with LPGA Championship winner Yani Tseng, Sarah Lee, Sarah Kemp, Meaghan Francella, Reilley Rankin and Wendy Ward.
Ochoa, a seven-time winner this year, opened with a 70.
Three share lead at Senior Players Championship: Phil Blackmar, Bruce Fleisher and Des Smyth shot 5-under 65s to share the first-round lead in the Senior Players Championship at Timonium, Md., the fifth and final Champions Tour major of the year.
Blackmar holed out from the fairway for eagle to help offset four bogeys, Fleisher made four straight birdies early in his round, and Smyth had a bogey-free day to top the leaderboard. All three are winless this year.
Fred Funk, Scott Hoch, Bernhard Langer and Eduardo Romero opened with 66s and 19 players were within three strokes of the lead after an ideal day for scoring at the East Course at Baltimore Country Club.
Broadhurst rallies to take share of lead at Madrid Masters: England's Paul Broadhurst birdied two of his last three holes for a 4-under 67 and a share of the first-round lead in the Madrid (Spain) Masters with Sweden's Magnus Carlsson and Australia's Marcus Fraser.
Spanish Ryder Cup player Miguel Angel Jimenez was part of a large pack two shots back, while former U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina settled for a 71.

Jankovic, Davydenko advance at Moscow
Top-ranked Jelena Jankovic rallied from a set down to beat qualifier Vera Dushevina 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Kremlin Cup at Moscow.
In the men's draw, top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1, 6-1.
Nishikori, Ancic reach Stockholm quarterfinals: Wild-card Kei Nishikori advanced to the quarterfinals of the Stockholm (Sweden) Open, beating Dominik Hrbaty 6-1, 1-6, 7-5.
Nishikori will face No. 2 Mario Ancic, a 7-6 (4), 6-4 winner over Steve Darcis.
Top-seeded David Nalbandian, No. 3 Jarkko Nieminen and No. 4 Robin Soderling also reached the last eight.
Kohlschreiber, Lopez, Monfils, Melzer advance: Philipp Kohlschreiber, Feliciano Lopez, Gael Monfils and Juergen Melzer completed the quarterfinal lineup of the BA Tennis Trophy at Vienna, Austria.

Padres downplay sale report
The San Diego Padres dismissed as "highly speculative" a report that owner John Moores will sell 49 percent of the team as part of a divorce settlement with wife Becky.
"Obviously, since the Padres are part of the community estate, the matter of the Padres will need to be addressed as part of the divorce proceedings," the team said in a statement released in response to the report by KNSD-TV.
"No decision regarding the Padres has been made, and the divorce proceedings are the subject of confidential mediation. Neither John Moores nor the Padres will have any further comment on the report."
Mets reliever Burgos jailed while awaiting trial: New York Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos will be jailed for three months while awaiting trial for a hit-and-run accident that killed two women.
The 24-year-old reliever told The Associated Press that a Dominican judge ordered him to remain behind bars Wednesday night out of concerns for his safety.
Burgos is accused of abandoning the victims of the Sept. 30 accident and fleeing, charges that can carry six months to two years in prison. He disappeared after the accident but turned himself in Tuesday.
Twins catcher Redmond picked up for another season: The Minnesota Twins will keep backup catcher Mike Redmond for another season, paying him $950,000.
The 37-year-old Redmond hit .287 in 38 games this season, with 12 RBIs. He has a .292 career average.
Former big league pitcher, coach Dal Canton dies: Bruce Dal Canton, a former high school teacher who turned a good showing at a tryout camp into a lengthy career as a major league pitcher and coach, has died. He was 66.
Dal Canton died Tuesday of esophageal cancer. He worked until mid-May as the pitching coach at Class A Myrtle Beach, Atlanta's affiliate in the Carolina League.
Dal Canton went 51-49 with a 3.67 ERA from 1967 to 1977 with Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Atlanta and the Chicago White Sox.

Holyfield offered fight with Valuev
Evander Holyfield has been offered a fight with WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev in December.
Holyfield, a former heavyweight champ who turns 46 this month, has not fought since losing a unanimous decision a year ago to then-WBO champiion Sultan Ibragimov.

Real Salt Lake opens new stadium with tie
Defender Jamison Olave scored the tying goal off a corner kick by Javier Morales late in the first half and Real Salt Lake opened its new stadium with a 1-1 tie against the New York Red Bulls.
Both teams gained a point and moved slightly closer to clinching an MLS playoff spot with two games remaining.
