Man escapes injury in Ventura shooting

A Ventura man narrowly escaped injury late last night when another man shot at his car, police said.

The 44-year-old victim told police he was sitting in his car in the 1500 block of S. Saticoy Avenue in Ventura, waiting for a friend shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday when a man he did not know drove up next to him, asked him where he was from and told him to roll down his window, said Sgt. Jack Richards of the Ventura police.

When the man did not roll down his driver's side window, the other man broke it, Richards said.

Terrified, the Ventura man started his car and drove off in a hurry, Richards said.

While he was driving away, the assailant fired at least two shots at him with a handgun, hitting his car, police said.

He was not injured.

Police encourage anyone who witnessed the shooting to call detectives at 339-4394.

It seems our local streets are more dangerous now than the soldiers in the middle east. At least over there you get the chance to defend yourself "sometimes".

Why do gangmembers think everyone is from a gang?

that's just IT, BrownBear -- gang members DON'T THINK at all...

I'd say they both had gang ties, if not, one definitely knew or knew of the other for some reason or another. It could of been random, but most likely not. Who was the friend he was picking up? a know gang member perhaps? They don't say if it was a girl/guy being picked up. Maybe an ex boyfriend.

I agree with bjimenez. It could have just been random, but too, so many questions are raised and the whole thing sounds fishy.

brwnbear-To answer your question, they do this because they lack self worth, family unity, a sense of direction, education, morals, dignity, responsibility, and discipline. I could go on and on, but I think you get my point.

Let's see. A car pulls up next to you, they proceed to break your window and fire rounds at you. Maybe you might have a description of the car? Maybe that description should be shared with the general public? Year? Make? Model? Color? It might be nice to know if we should be on the lookout for a particular type of vehicle.

Well, here we go: another example of what happens when you build a lot of low income housing in what should be a good area... the people who move in bring crime and gangs with them.
All those new homes on the east end of Telephone are the source all the new problems in the Saticoy area...
I guess if Obama is elected, this trend will continue until we have total anarchy... continue to give more to the "have nots" and the "haves" will go broke or be killed by evil-doers like this... I will cling to my guns and my God thank you very much!

luvingbeachlife,

I'm feeling you man, but in the dark, caught by surprize, someone busting the window, he immediately high tailed-it outta there, headlights behind him, then gunshots hit his car!

The last thing I'm able to do is get a description of the car.

But, The idiot that shot at him, spoke to him first. He had to have seen his face!

Where is that description?

That's what he gets for sitting in his car on 1500 South Saticoy Ave! Hey kids... that right by "The Camp"! NOT exactly the best neighborhood!

I just have to wonder If or when the immigration policy of the united states starts to deport illigal immigrants, if crimes like this will slow? gangs will maybe not be as many?, gang tagging will slow? just a thought.

DON'T THEY HAVE CAMERAS SURROUNDING 1500 S.SATICOY AVE? FOR SOME REASON WHEN A SHOOTING ACCURES AT 1500 S. SATICOY AVE THEY SEEM TO GET AWAY WITH IT. PIZZA DELIVARY DRIVER GOT SHOT AND SO ON? A VERY TIGHT KNIT COMMUNITY AT THERE CONVENIECE.

I don't think this is an illegal immigration issue (pick yourself up off the floor) but I firmly believe the people who are in these local gangs are actually legal citizens. Maybe children of illegals, but I don't think that deporting is going to lessen this violence.

The only way to get this violence to go down is to get these people to be too afraid to go to prison, maybe hold the parents more accountable for their actions prior to becoming adults so the parents take a more active role and we need more after school programs and mentors to get these kids off the streets and doing more productive stuff so they don't turn to gangs as a source of belonging.

You have got to be kidding me. This is just getting absurd! "Where are you from?".....c'mon already!!! Geesh, just leave people alone! I hate these effin 'gang members'- fighting, shooting, and killing over land that dosen't even belong to them in the first place. I'm glad the man got away and I hope he files the description on this piece of crap soon!

You got it right exheaven1 " land that doesn't belong to them." Not one of them is a home owner or pays land taxes! How can so many parents at 1500 S. Saticoy Ave not know there children or even adult children are hiding guns in there homes?

Posted by janabanana71 on October 10, 2008 at 1:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well, obviously the suspects were gang members, no question! "Where are you from?" is the classic one-liner used before attempting to gun someone down. Whether the victim was a gang banger or not will remain to be seen. All he had to be doing was wearing any kind of baseball cap to be suspected of being a gang banger, so...who knows? But it IS getting SO OLD AND TIRED!

spay and neuter. treat them like wild rabid dogs. that is the only way to end this pointless violence. and until it actually affects a politicians family member directly, nothing will change.
the camp is a joke. I would wager a guess that more than 75% of the "parents" living in there, do not speak any english. and since they do not trust the police in mexico, they automatically do not trust the police here. this is why so many crimes are not solved in that area.
you can thank the Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation for bringing this to the city of Ventura. just remember that name folks. CEDC.

I remember way back in the 70's when they city of ventura wanted to remove all the families from this community and the people of ventura county and others protested on there behalf. What a mistake, I wonder what thoughts Ceasar Chavez would have regarding this community?

I agree that most of the gang members are probably legal citizens and many of their parents are illegal. But I do think it is an illegal immigration related problem. Illegals have no regard for our laws and pass that attitutde on to their children. They have been rewarded by not going by the law. The next generation is just taking it a step further.
Until we enforce our laws and stop being a sanctuary city/state, these and other crimes will just keep going up.
