7 groups honored for community work
Seven organizations have won $50,000 in grants to promote community change and social justice in Ventura County, officials said this week.
The annual awards come from the Social Justice Fund for Ventura County.
Donors started the fund a couple of years ago to help grass-roots organizations change conditions in their communities and remove barriers to equality.
This year's winners:
n $10,000 to the Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project, supporting an effort among farmworker families in El Rio and Nyeland Acres. The families want to improve education, health, child care, transportation and affordable housing, and reduce gang violence.
n $8,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ventura County, for youth leadership training and development in the Fillmore and Piru areas.
n $7,700 to the Central Coast Alliance for a Sustainable Economy, or CAUSE, to advocate for reforms in environmental justice, education, immigration, housing and healthcare.
n $7,700 for the Ventura County Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice, to support religious efforts to advocate for social justice issues.
n $6,300 to the Ventura County Rainbow Alliance for education and community organizing on marriage for same-sex couples as an equality issue.
n $5,300 for Arts for Action, helping youth develop art media promoting causes such as cleanup of toxic waste.
n $5,000 to Cabrillo Economic Development Corp., to support improvement of neighborhoods with affordable housing projects in downtown Oxnard.
The winners were selected from 20 applicants seeking funding of almost $164,000. They will be honored at a reception in November.
