Candidates vying for two open seats on the Thousand Oaks City Council have raised $126,200 in cash to date in a race pitting five challengers against the two incumbents, according to campaign disclosure statements.

The total does not include loans the candidates made to themselves or nonmonetary contributions. Five of the candidates have given themselves loans that range from $250 to $11,300. The other two, Ramaul Rush and George Akrey, both filed short forms saying they expect to receive less than $1,000 in campaign donations.

Mayor Jacqui Irwin, seeking a second term on the five-member council, led the candidates in contributions. She has raised $63,381 so far this year, including $37,381 raised from July 1 to Sept. 30. Irwin's total includes a $10,120 loan she made to her campaign.

Her contributors range from Jerry Brodecky, president of Thousand Oaks Toyota, to Nancy Dillon, Thousand Oaks' city clerk emeritus, to retirees and homemakers.

"I think the fundraising has been going relatively well," Irwin said. "I have a broad range of supporters, and I'm really proud to have people support me over a broad spectrum."

Councilman Tom Glancy, seeking election to a full term after being appointed to the council, has raised $46,660 to date, including $20,875 from July 1 to Sept. 30. Glancy has loaned his campaign $11,330. Contributors to his campaign include Buick-GMC of Thousand Oaks, Councilman Dennis Gillette and fellow dentists.

Both Irwin and Glancy have said the economy has affected fundraising efforts.

"The economy has taken a bite out of everything," Glancy said. "I feel really bad about the nonprofits."

Challengers Al Adam, Holly LaRue and Ernest LeGault followed, raising $31,390, $11,154 and $1,975, respectively.

Adam's total includes a $10,000 loan he made to his campaign. His contributors include county Supervisor Linda Parks.

"I think I've done pretty good," Adam said. "Most of my donors are neighbors, friends and residents."

LaRue has received contributions from Thousand Oaks Councilwoman Claudia Bill-de la Peña, and Jesse Ruf, the owner of the Do it Center. She has given her campaign a $9,900 loan.

LeGault, who gave his campaign a $250 loan, received contributions from William Benson of the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra and the business H&M Konjoyan.

"I haven't taken that much money, because I don't think it's necessary for this kind of race," LeGault said. "I didn't get into this race to show people how I could spend money. I got into this race to show people how I could refrain from spending money."

The candidates are spending the money on everything from the traditional yard sign to locally viewed commercial spots on national news stations.

Adam and LaRue have both invested in the commercials, saying it's a good forum and value for the money they've raised. Both said the advertisements supplement mailers and precinct walking.

"I felt it was a good way to reach people. It may be even better than the mailer," LaRue said.

Okay, fellow citizens of Thousand Oaks... this November 4 we are presented with a prime opportunity to start making some much needed change to the makeup of our T.O. City Council. With the exception of councilwoman Claudia de la Pena, the other four council members need to go!

I cannot urge everyone enough the importance of NOT voting for the two incumbents seeking re-election, Jacqui Irwin and Tom Glancy. These two should NOT be rewarded with another term in office, via our votes.

We have three fresh candidates who deserve our attention and consideration... Al Adam, Holly LaRue and Ernest LeGault. We all need to send a clear message to our current T.O. City Council by electing two of these three new candidates this November 4!

Again, we cannot, and should not, reward Jacqui Irwin and Tom Glancy with another term in office. And when Andy Fox & Dennis Gillette's terms are up... we'll vote them out of office as well during that future election!
