Fall fun, fitness at the YMCA
Summer may be over, but there's plenty of fun and fitness to be had at the YMCA. With school in session and holidays full of yummy treats coming up, it's important that the whole family stays active and in shape! Both the Camarillo and Ventura Family YMCAs offer plenty of activities and classes to keep kids and adults busy this fall.
Aquatics
Swim classes in the cool fall months are no problem in the warm YMCA pools! Lessons taught by certified swim instructors are available for children age 6 months and older. For those interested in more competitive swimming, both the Ventura and Camarillo branches offer opportunities to join a competitive swim team.
Does your child love the water, but swimming laps isn't his or her thing? Try Ventura's synchronized swimming, wet ball or water polo programs. For a gentle adult workout, consider water aerobics at either Camarillo or Ventura.
Sports and fitness
Sports and fitness opportunities abound this fall, for both children and adults. Camarillo's Holiday Bowl Series Flag Football League begins Oct. 30 for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade. This is a non-tackle league designed around kids learning and mastering skills and having fun. Ventura offers an indoor soccer league this winter for kids age 3-12. The primary focus for all youth sports at the YMCA is always having fun. In addition to sports leagues, both YMCAs offer a wide array of other fitness opportunities, such as cheerleading, ballet, hip hop, basketball, baseball and racquetball classes, in Ventura, and "gymventures," ballet, cheer/tumble, judo and volleyball in Camarillo. Ventura also offers programs for home-schooled children.
Day camp
Keep those kids busy during fall break. Ventura is hosting a Fall Break Camp from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 20-24 and will include water activities, sports, and even Nintendo Wii playing
Child care
Both the Ventura and Camarillo YMCAs offer before- and after-school child care to the community. Ventura sites include Poinsettia, Elmhurst, Loma Vista and Rio del Norte elementary schools. The YMCA is the only licensed on-site child care provider at these schools. Camarillo sites include Las Posas, Dos Caminos, Tierra Linda, La Mariposa and Rancho Rosal (currently held at the YMCA) elementary schools. Financial aid is available.
Ventura's "After the Bell," which beganMonday, is an after-school program designed for middle school students in Ventura. This program is held five days a week after school until 6 p.m. Snacks are provided daily. The teen center has space for homework, art projects, billiards, basketball, foosball, air hockey, Nintendo Wii and Wii Fit, and much more. The program is held on-site at the Ventura Family YMCA Teen Center.
About the YMCA
The Camarillo and Ventura YMCAs serve more than 40,000 individuals annually through facility memberships, before- and after-school child care, day and resident camps, youth sports, swim lessons, teen programs, and many more healthy lifestyles and community enriching programs throughout the Ojai, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Oxnard, Camarillo, Saticoy and Ventura areas.
