Stranger Danger/Safety Awareness classes offered for youth

Does your child know what to do in a dangerous situation? If a stranger approached and tried to abduct your child would he or she react proactively? Sycamore Drive Community Center, 1692 Sycamore Drive, Simi Valley, will be the location of a series of classes aimed to help youngsters.

The course helps children learn abduction prevention, who is a stranger, what bad people look like, procedures for contacting 911 and more. They will also learn what to do if lost in a store, approached by a person or car, grabbed while riding a bicycle, and other dangerous scenarios.

Instructor Peter Carrube, of Street Smart Self-Defense, teaches easy, effective techniques children of any age or size can use for protection. Parents are not required to attend classes, but will participate regularly by testing their children using a home questionnaire. This will help parents keep in touch with what the children are learning and how well the child is grasping the lessons.

According to Carrube, "I think this is a wonderful, fun, important, and much needed program to offer the children of our community. I have been teaching this class in other locations throughout Simi Valley and look forward to offering it for parks and rec."

The course runs six weeks on Mondays from 3:30-4:15 p.m. from October 27-December 1 for children ages 6-11. Registration and class information may be found at www.rsrpd.org or by calling (805) 584-4456.
