Be warned: Propety tax bills have been mailed

The Ventura County Treasurer-Tax Collector mailed secured property tax bills for 2008-09 on Thursday. Property owners who do not receive a bill by Oct. 10 should call 654-3744 or request a duplicate bill by e-mailing HelpingHand@ventura.org.

The first installment of the tax must be paid by Dec. 10 to avoid a 10 percent penalty.

There are several ways to pay the bill. One is in person at the Hall of Administration at the County Government Center, 800 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura. Office hours are 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:45 p.m. weekdays, and a drop box will be available near the pay phone at the east entrance to the building.

The bill also can be paid over the Internet at http://www.venturapropertytax.org using a credit card or electronic check. A convenience fee is charged by the payment processing company. A 2.5 percent fee is assessed when the tax is paid by credit card over the phone at 654-3744.

The payment can be mailed with a payment stub to Tax Collector, 800 S. Victoria Ave., Ventura, CA 93009-1290.

The county expects to collect a record $1.2 billion in secured property tax revenue this year and has issued 244,075 bills.

I was hoping there was some mention about how the Treasurer handled the declining home values[?!].

Also I hope the Treasurer has improved the process by which supplemental bills are sent out. If you're not expecting it, how do know to look for it?? I was hit with a 15% penalty for a bill I never received! It wasn't till a year later that they decided to send another notice, [of course by then it incurred the maximum penalty]! A 2nd notice should've been sent just after the due date - although then they wouldn't have made as much $ in penalties. I paid the price for a poorly run agency...
