SOFTBALL

ATHLETICS PREVAIL

Derald Adair fifth annual Memorial Tournament

Highlights: Anderson Athletics — The 18-and-under girls captured the championship at Camarillo High. The Athletics edged the Riots 1-0 for the championship. The Athletics finished the weekend with a 5-1 record. In pool play, the Riots handed the Athletics a 4-1 loss. The Athletics defeated the Blast 3-0 and Waves 6-0. In single-elimination on Sunday, the Athletics edged the Bustos Elite 2-1 behind a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. The Athletics edged the Blast 3-2 in the semifinal. The championship win earned a berth in the USSSA World Series in Plano, Texas, in the summer of 2009. Defensive player for the tournament was awarded to pitcher Joanna Boicourt. Offensive player for the tournament was given to catcher Kayla Mochizuki. The players are Sami Alcaraz, Ciara Becerril, Boicourt, Ashlee Coronado, Tori Duran, Mariah Flores, Stephanie Martello, Mochizuki, Kenyn Poe, Heaven Silveira, Leilani Tupua and Melissa Zavala. The coaches are Jaime Alcaraz, Tony Becerril and Lee Boicourt. Nicole Victoria Pinedo, a former UCLA Bruins player from Camarillo High, trains the team.

MISFITS FINISH SECOND

Derald Adair fifth annual Memorial Tournament

Highlights: Ventura County Misfits — The 13-and-under fastpitch travel team placed second in the 18-tean tournament. The Misfits defeated the HP Breeze 4-2, Santa Paula X-Plosion 12-1 and Simi Smash 8-2. In the championship game, the Valley Tribe edged the Misfits 4-3. The Misfits are Stephanie Ortiz (defensive MVP of the tournament), Annaisa Sanchez, Alyssa Alcaraz, Olivia Hernandez, Rebecca Lucero, Meagan Contreras, Sarah Carrillo, Mary Olguin, Kimberly Miranda, Alex Esparza and Andrea Alarcon. The coaches are Joe Ortiz, Anna Ortiz, Javier Alcaraz and Robert Miranda.

MAGDALENO SCHOOL BUCS FINISH 3-0-1

Ojai Fall League

Highlights: Bucs — The 12-and-under Bucs travel team defeated the Devils 1, Venom 10-0 and Mavericks 10-4. The Bucs battled the Pirates to a 5-5 tie in the round-robin opener. The Bucs finished off the round robin competition with a win over the Devils. Mark Rivera continued his torrid hitting streak. The Bucs' leadoff hitter had two hits, including a double and scored two runs in the win. The Bucs, who could only manage six hits in the fourth game of the weekend, put the game out of reach when Antonio Gaxiola slammed a 3-0 fastball over the centerfield wall for a two-run home run. Tavish Towner added an RBI double in the fifth and Andrew Perez had a two-strike, two-out RBI double in the third inning. Leo Monjardin was the starter for the Bucs, who used Rivera, Towner and Gaxiola to finish the game. In the first game on Sunday, the Bucs, behind Rivera and Marcus Bettancourt, handed the Venom a loss. Rivera had two hits in three at-bats, scored two runs and had two RBIs, while Bettancourt went two for three with four RBIs in the win. The Bucs received run production from eight of their players. Beside Rivera and Bettancourt, the Bucs' Towner, Monjardin, Gaxiola, Devin Peterson, Joseph Juarez and Mikey Avila-Sedillos all either had a hit, an RBI or scored a run. On Saturday, Rivera, Towner, Monjardin and Bettancourt each drove in two runs to lead the Bucs to a victory over the Santa Barbara Mavericks. The Bucs started Towner on the mound and the crafty righthander pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win. The Bucs used Peterson, Bettancourt and Lalo Miranda in relief to seal the win. The Bucs got offensive output from Gaxiola, who went 2 for 3 with two RBI in the win. The Bucs got production from Perez, who went one for two with one RBI, while teammates Travis Eckberg and Miranda got hits in the win. In the opening game of the four-game set, the Bucs found themselves in a battle with powerful Ventura Pirates. The Bucs and Pirates battled to a tie in a game that was called because of a time limit. Shortstop Rivera had two hits, including a double. Monjardin, Peterson and Perez had hits in the tie.

The Pirates had four solo home runs off the Bucs pitching staff. The Bucs started Monjardin with Towner pitching the fourth inning. Gaxiola pitched the final two innings of the game.

BUCS 10, SIMI VALLEY 3

Simi Valley Baseball League Complex

Highlights: Bucs — Carlos Sanchez had two hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs in the 13-and-under Fall Ball League. Ricchie Gonzales doubled, scored one run and had two RBIs to lead the Bucs to a victory over the Dodgers on Saturday. The Bucs also got big offensive performances from Codi Santana, who had one hit, scored one run and drove in one run and Corey Portuga, who had one RBI with one hit and one run scored. Chris Alvarez, Tyler Spencer, Landin Osborne and Cody Roddick each had a hit in the win. Alvarez was the starter for the Bucs and he scattered two hits over three innings of work. Alvarez struck out two and gave up one run. Portugal worked the fourth and fifth innings giving up two runs. Spencer worked the sixth inning to pick up the save for the Bucs.

BUCS 14U 11, SIMI VALLEY 6

BUCS 14U 20, MOORPARK KNIGHTS 1

Simi Valley Baseball League Complex

Highlights: Bucs — The 14-and-under Bucs finished league play on a winning note.

Will Walker had a big day for the Bucs with two doubles and four RBIs in the win over Simi Valley. Matt Mosely banged out three hits and drove in three runs. Josh Olson and Pat Hoffman had a multi-hit performances. Hoffman scored three runs. Landin Osborne drove in two runs. Walker started on the mound for the Bucs. The righthander allowed one run to pick up his second win of the season. Tyler Cook, Olson, Sawyer Brown and Macauley Ortiz each pitched in relief to help the Bucs secure the win. Olson struck out the side in his inning of work. On Saturday, the Bucs used a 15-hit attack to hand the Moorpark Knights a loss in Moorpark. Mosely was four for four for the Bucs and Chance Dingman, Josh Olson and Max Damron had multi-hit games in the win. Olson and Dingman had a triple and a double respectively. The Bucs started Max Damron and the righthander improved his record to 3-1. Cook, Brown and Olson combined to shut down Moorpark the rest of the way.

Our Academy is hosting an amazing event on Friday December 12th. The Professional squad for Chivas USA (the MLS team) is holding tryouts for 1st team, reserves and their U-16 and U-18 Youth Academy here in Simi Valley! It is from 4:00-8:00pm at Fields #2 and #3 behind the softball fields at the Rec Center complex. It is free to the public to come and watch professional try-outs AND if they are interested in trying out they can register through our website at www.chivassimivalley.com

Then the next day, Saturday Dec 13th at the same fields, our Academy is holding try-outs for our club teams. Time slots for age groups are posted on our website as well. Can you post this information in your paper? It is probably the first time a professional sports team has ever had try-outs in Simi Valley!
