Wood, Jones still battling injuries

Two defending CIF-Southern Section champions likely will enter the playoffs without star players.

Cierre Wood of Santa Clara High and Malcolm Jones of Oaks Christian School almost certainly won't play in first-round games tonight due to injuries.

Wood sprained an ankle near the end of Santa Clara's loss to Oaks Christian in a Tri-Valley League game on Nov. 7. The senior running back missed last week's game against Carpinteria and will probably miss tonight's game against El Segundo at Channel Islands High.

"He's started jogging and he wants to play," said Santa Clara coach Fran Fredette. "But we've looked at the ankle and it's still pretty swollen."

Fredette said Wood likely would be available for the quarterfinals in the Northwest Division. That's provided Santa Clara prevails tonight against El Segundo.

"If by some miracle we win tonight, he should be ready to go next week," said Fredette.

Jones suffered a shoulder separation in the third period of the Lions' game against Santa Clara and missed last week's regular-season finale against Nordhoff.

He is expected to miss the home playoff opener against South Torrance.

"If this was the NFL, we'd call him ‘doubtful,' " said Oaks Christian coach Bill Redell. "We're hopeful of getting him back next week."

Oaks Christian is a five-time defending CIF-SS champion, including last year's title in the Northwest Division. Santa Clara won last year's Mid-Valley Division championship.

This is to the comment from the Santa Clara Coach. Miracles due come to those who believe. I think that the question here is Do you believe in your team??? You do have more than just 1 player on the team that can bring the win home!!! Try some positiveness towards the team instead of ALWAYS having something NEGATIVE to say. WE LOVE YOU BOYS GO AND SHOW THEM WHAT YOUR MADE OF!!!!!! And no matter what the outcome is we are so proud of all of you!!!!!

Good luck tonight Saints! Work hard and believe in yourselves, especially when others don't quite have the needed faith and spirit. You have worked hard and know you are ready for the next level. Keep your minds focused on one game at a time and you will find yourselves right where you want to be in 3 weeks!! DO YOU BELIEVE??? I know it is our time for you to show me. I can imagine one more baby.. oh yeah, one more!!
