A Sobering Reminder

A Sobering Reminder

On December 4/5, Thousand Oaks High School will have its bi-annual "Every Fifteen Minutes" program for juniors and seniors. During these emotional 2 days, program organizers do everything they can to bring home the reality of the consequences of teen drinking and driving. The name of the program is derived from the statistic that every fifteen minutes, someone is killed by a drunk driver. It's particularly poignant since we have had at least three fatalities due to DUI drivers within the past year here in the Conejo and adjacent communities. Teens have a tendency to think of themselves as invincible, and the two-day program is orchestrated to prove that they are indeed fallible and very vulnerable if they make poor choices. The mangled truck in the photo was on campus for a day so that students could have a good look at the aftermath of a devastating crash after the driver was hit by someone under the influence. Again, all involved are doing their best to bring the message home.Funding for the program comes from a variety of sources sponsors, fundraisers, local grants, and individual contributions. Due to budget shortages, the program is in need of further assistance from the community. Anyone wishing to learn more about sending a donation to the Every Fifteen Minutes program, please contact Teri Guillies (tguillies@adelphia.net) for information. We thank you in advance!
