Paul McAnulty wanted to go somewhere he felt needed, and the Boston Red Sox needed left-handed hitters.

On Tuesday, McAnulty signed a free-agent minor league contract with the Red Sox.

The 27-year-old Oxnard native joins the Red Sox after spending his first seven seasons with the San Diego Padres organization.

"I think it is the best choice for me," McAnulty said. "It's a good fit and I think a lot of good can come from this and I can help that team out."

McAnulty agreed to a one-year contract with a guaranteed three-month minor league stint.

"The Red Sox were the first ones to call and they have high hopes for Paul," said McAnulty's agent, Rocky Hall. "If he goes down there and does well, I am sure he will break spring training with the big club."

An Oxnard High and Oxnard College product, the 5-foot-10, 220-pound McAnulty was drafted by the Padres out of Long Beach State in the 12th round of the 2002 amateur draft.

He has spent a total of 124 games at the major league level with a career batting average of .208.

Last season, McAnulty batted .207 with 28 hits, 13 RBIs and three home runs in 135 at-bats for the Padres.

McAnulty is scheduled to report to spring training with the Red Sox in Fort Myers, Fla., in February.

"It's not a major league deal, but it's a chance to make the major league club," McAnulty said. "I've got to earn my spot with a top-notch team, and that is a great opportunity."

McAnulty will be holding a batting clinic for local youth players on Dec. 20 at his Who's On First Batting Cages in Oxnard.

"I have been exactly where these kids are and it's good to let them know it is possible," McAnulty said. "It's all about how hard you want to work and how bad you want it."
