More ballots in; 10 percent left

Download Podcast  Download this story as a podcast!

Tony Strickland pulled ahead of Hannah-Beth Jackson by almost 500 more votes on Friday, giving him a lead of 2,027 in the race for California's 19th District State Senate seat.

Ventura County officials counted another 8,933 ballots on Thursday and Friday, bringing the countywide total to 303,669 ballots. That leaves about 10 percent of the vote still uncounted. The remaining ballots are either absentee ballots there were turned in on Election Day, or provisional ballots.

Both types of ballots have to be checked against the voter rolls before they can be counted, so they take much longer to count than standard ballots. County officials have until Dec. 2 to complete and certify the election count.

If Strickland wins, we all lose! He cares nothing about the voters of the 19th Senate District. He only cares about his own wallet and keeping his multi million dollar mansion in Moorpark. He only cares about the oil companies and tobacco companies that bankroll him.

I'll interperet Poppa's post for those who don't speak Democratize.

"If Strickland wins, we all lose!"
I want a handout. Strickland won't give me one!

"He cares nothing about the voters of the 19th Senate District."
We are all freeloaders in the 19th District. Strickland thinks we should work for a living, not fair!"

"He only cares about his own wallet and keeping his multi million dollar mansion in Moorpark."
I live in an apartment! I hate anyone who owns a house!

"He only cares about the oil companies and tobacco companies that bankroll him."
All Republicans are evil! If I mention oil companies and tobacco companies everyone will think Strickland is evil too!

Time for Hanna Beth-Jackson to do her neighbors a service and concede.

Understand. This is not some partisan ploy. The math is insurmountable. In this period of imploding budgets she can save the taxpayers tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars with grace and dignity.

By the same measure, Measure U that is, it is by no means decided and the participants on both sides need to press their claims until there is a decision. Again, I can only hope everyone with an interest is at this point is only interested in an honest and complete vote.

What huntram actually said "me huntram complete idiot. Me a stupid lemming who follow Bush and Strickland over cliff. Me love Strickland because he believe man and dinosaurs live together 5,000 years ago and all were together on Ark with Noah. Me roll over and show my neck and maybe Tony scratch my belly and throw me crumb. Me need Tony and other far right extremist morons to tell me what to think and say. So what Strickland unethcial scumbag who lives off tax dollars like hog at trough and never deliver for voters."

I'm glad you thought my peice was funny enough to emulate!
One small difference of course is that my peice was meant to be funny, yours was meant to be hateful.
The good news is that I know somewhere in that hard heart of yours is something good. God Loves you and so do I!
God Bless you and peace be with you!

You will notice that huntram did not deny that he/she and Strickland/Palin all actually believe that 5,000 years ago men and dinosaurs all ran around together and all were on the Ark together. The last time people like this were in charge they were burning witches and crushing warlocks with stones, that is why they have not been in charge since.

With more than 20,000 provisional ballots in three counties left to go, plus those absentees turned in on election day, I hardly think anybody should throw in the towel. Provisionals and drop offs always lean Democratic.

Down goes Hannah Beth!! This is great news. The last thing we need in a tough economy is a tax minded leftist who thinks we should pay taxes like Europe. Hannah Beth, maybe you should try running in Berkeley because LA, Vta, and SB counties don't want you Taxin' Jackson.

To the morlots, bottom feeders and general handout-seekers; Looks like your holiday does not come early this year.
hutram, thanks for the translation. Unfortunately, the out-of-work but own a computer libs waiting for their piece of what you work for are a little testy since it now appears that's not happening. Time for their naps? And when they wake up, maybe they'll stop dreaming of their blissful free ride and go make an honest living. Certainly they'll understand when the Dems try to take it away.
Go Strickland! Maybe not the best person for the job, but beats the tar out of the opponent. Beat it HBJ. You're too weak of an alternative! You embarassed our district. Take your cult with you.

"The Stricklands have made their livelihood out of politics" Gee, I'm sure glad that Biden, Obama, Kennedy, et al, have always held productive jobs and have never lived off of the public trough.

Jackson would be a disaster. She votes partisan, period. We need some balance in Sacramento. The cost of illegal immigration in California is approximately that of the budget shortfall right now. Tony is absolutely needed to give us any chance of avoiding a liberal storm that will cause us to lose what remains of our previously wonderful state.

Audra was a most excellent elementary school teacher. Her dedication, concern and approach to problem solving is evident in her political life, also. I am proud to support both Tony and Audra.

Headed for a long night shift now. Will check in the AM for any more comments.

Gee I wonder why Oxnard wants to keep Camarillo? A good riddance to Camarillo would be more in keeping with what many have expressed about Camarillo on these blogs and boards. So...I wonder what it is that makes them hold on so....???????
And I wonder...will it be possible for tptb, perhaps from the office of the secretary of state, to determine if there was a majority vote within only the City of Camarillo, less Oxnard and PH?

Posted by For1776 on November 14, 2008 at 4:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The willful misinformation on this thread is astounding. Illegal immigration is half the cost of the budget shortfall?

What has the state increased its spending on in the past few years? Prisons! What accounts for another jump? The Governator cut the vehicle license fee tax and then offered to reimburse cities and counties for the funds they would be missing from the loss of that tax revenue. Prison spending and the VLF cut are things Republicans want.

Spending on education and social services is flat.

Why do we have a shortfall? The housing market is down and thus so are property tax receipts. People are making less money on their investments and short-term capital gains taxes are not being collected. Spending is off and so are sales taxes.

Illegal immigration could be curtailed if they did not have people so willing to hire illegals in the U.S. It is estimated more than half the migrant farmworker labor force is illegal. But of course that keeps your produce prices nice and low. Crack down on the companies that hire illegals.

Did you know Tony Strickland voted to give driver's licences to illegal aliens? He did. Did you know Audra took a big campagin donation from a local produce company which has been investigated numerous times for hiring illegals? She did.

The reason the counting of the ballots is taking so long is because the signatures on the envelopes of the absentee ballots have to be compared to the voter registration cards to make sure that the signatures match. Wouldn't want any voter fraud now would we?

The intact reason behind the enormous illegal immigration in US is that there are incentives for them to come here. The benefits they are getting are out of all proportions with their contribution to the society.
Benefits examples for the children of illegal immigrants:
- public school education grade K-12, even free preschool for them - I know one in Moorpark (we are being taxed for it)
- medical insurance provided via the school (guess who’s being taxed for it?)
- free breakfast/lunch at the school (guess again!)

Why is that? Because they are not asked to provide any sort of ID when they register kids in school, and somehow they qualify as jobless or low income people. Could someone tell me who created these holes?

If you weigh-in their low wages on farm fields in comparison to the benefits they are receiving - sure they love to come here. Take the benefits away - you’d be surprised of the results. The army will diminish in a blink!

That’s why there is no such thing in any country in the whole world - there are no incentives for illegal people to come there.

So, when I hear an argument: “ Oh, Canada has a state healthcare - we should have that too “ - I argue back that there is no comparison as Canada immigration laws are what the common sense laws supposed to be. So, their social system is not providing for the army of the illegals.
USA, on the contrary, cannot afford state healthcare, unless of course they milk us out from tip to toe to cover the expense!

Now, notice I am not talking about legal immigration - I am all up for it - as this is a country of immigrants - unless you are a native American Indian.

Did anyone notice that there was no 2008 pre-election agenda of any sort with regards to immigration laws?

Scapegoat, count me in.

I am so sick everyone talking about California going broke while we pay for every illegal immigrant that steps foot on our soil.

QUIT SPENDING MONEY ON ILLEGALS - our budget will be fixed overnight.

Count me in. That's 6. Make sure you boycott any PTA fundraisers. Flip your schools to non-political PFAs, Parent Faculty Associations, or PFCs Parent Faculty Committees, or anything except the liberal PTA which is pro-illegals, pro dual language immersion, pro LGBT legislation, pro-communism, and pro CTA Teachers union.

Go to your school boards and demand that they start a policy to ask 100% of parents to prove citizenship or legal residency, starting this spring. And make sure that ALL volunteers in the classrooms are fingerprinted, and have a TB screening. Do not let ANYONE who is not here legally get on any education committee. It is amazing how many illegals are in control of millions of dollars of OUR money, because they sit on school committees. Imagine if we went to Europe or Asia and muscled our way into their government schools, and told them how to spend their tax money so that they could give our kids free education courtesy of THEIR citizens. It would never happen.

We are FOOLS to keep voting in board members that turn a blind eye to illegals in our classrooms as students, and on our campuses as parents and grandparents. If they are trespassing on our soil, they are criminals! But the school workers just smile at them and make them feel welcome!

Californians are telling illegals, let me roll over for you and you can stick it to me again and again. Please sir, may I have another? WE ARE SUCKERS FOR HAVING PUT UP WITH THIS! Our kids will be the ones to suffer because of the liberal politicians have given away our wealth here in California. We are now $22B in the red.

We need 25 observers from each party, and 74 temp workers to make the hash marks at $14.50 an hour. And don't forget the 2 armed guards tonight.

OK. I think we're OK now. Who will make it 8? (That's a tally of 5, or one hash mark, and 3 singles, right?)

Oh my, a cadre of Republicans calling for loads of extra taxes on businesses. What has the world come to? But only if they are caught hiring illegal aliens...

And so you propose to leave out all the children of illegal immigrants from our school system, even if they were born here? And the others, born elsewhere, are also free to roam the streets uneducated while their parents labor in the fields? Good plan.

Posted by For1776 on November 14, 2008 at 9:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

But Scapegoat... we must think out the logic of this. If they are found to be illegal, then they of course would be deported which would mean you are asking an employer to pay extra taxes on somebody who is no longer in their employ. But never mind about that. Let's just tax them after the fact then, shall we? Why, that would be a fine! Which of course they already are if they are caught with illegal aliens in their employ.

For a little diversion, check out Brian Dennert's website, plugging his conservative friend, Owen Paun, a McCain campaign worker in DC who spent 4 winters in Russia. I posted a little narrative about my experience visiting a remote Russian consulate back in 1976. Owen and I were having a nice little chat, when 2 slugs joined in and spoiled the ambiance. I rarely post on Dennert's site anymore, because there are so many vicious slashers out there on his pro-Democrat political blog.

http://blogs.venturacountystar.com/de...

Here is a link directly to Owen's new site. He is strongly anti-Communist. Why don't we start posting there? Maybe Owen can ban JW and Cassandra from posting there after us, since he owns the site. Wouldn't that be a breath of fresh air? A day without JW and Cassie...ahhhhhhhh.

I have a theory that there are lots of barely functioning sufferers of ADD and ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder) who barely escaped jail, who are drawn to Democrat radicalism because that is the party that rewards them for acting out!

I think that explains why ACORN workers all have the same druggy expression and same ugly clothes. There is way too much fraud going on in their organization for it to be just a co-incidence. I think it is basically a case of garbage in, garbage out.

Jake, nobody is proposing that anchor babies aren't americans (according to current law)and shouldn't be educated. The point is, the signatures of illegal alien parents are worthless, precisely because these people don't have a legal status here. Those families need to find legal sponsors, and let THEM sign as legal guardians. In a perfect world, that would necesitate a court order, and costs would be involved. Let them go through the hoops and the expense, just like divorced american parents have to do in custody cases.

Appointing casual sponsors will happen soon enough, I predict, because of threats of deportation raids. Already there are counseling sessions are churches and amnesty places telling illegals to indicate a guardian for their children, in case they get deported. But will these sponsors step up to the plate, when they are burdened with another mouth or 3 to feed? The American authorities do NOT have to recognize these guardians, since there is no court order. And why no court document? Because illegals don't want to call attention to themselves. It is a stupid circle.

And that's another reason why we shouldn't tolerate this invasion. Who the heck is going to take care of these parentless kids? It will end up being the government, again, some agency paid for by us! Is there any chance that the 13th amendment can be reversed? No more anchor baby laws! That was NOT the intention of this post-civil war amendment, written to enfranchise slaves born in the USA.

---------

Jake, please don’t twist the point. It makes me feel somehow that the next thing you’ll say will be something like: “These evil republicans want to execute these poor children.”

The point that I think people are trying to make (me included) is that the children of these illegals are born here in US due to the incentive given. That’s exactly the incentive I was mentioning in my earlier post. The parents come here to give birth because they know nobody will ask a question of their status in the hospital and their children will get full benefits of the U.S. citizens.

What I ask of you is to explain why it seems fair to you? What I think will happen is the politicians on both side will work hard again to legalize the parents, so you should not worry about poor uneducated children roaming the streets.

Along with politicians, I would have to agree with you, businesses will work hard to not get hit with more expense.

SO, as the corporate citizens we can’t fix the past - politicians (we think are representing us) won’t let that happen. But we can try to push taking the incentives away for the future comers. Do you think that will qualify for the plan and for you vote? C’mon Jake, you sound like someone I can reason with!

Undocumented workers contribute approximately $300 million to the state's economy, yet only receive about 10% of any kind of social benefit. In simple terms, this is a good bang for the buck. The more recent attitude of American workers feeling that some types of jobs are below them necessitates the need for such workers.

Many Americans (myself included) want to keep the price of consumer services and products down, but fail to equate the labor involved is what helps maintain a low price. Ridding ourselves of undocumented workers is akin to cutting off one's nose despite one's face.

The issue of illegal immigration has also become a race issue. When the topic is raised, the term "illegal" is often meant as Latino. People need to keep in mind that illegal immigrants also come from all over the world. However, for many it's much easier to single out one race over another.

This same hysteria sadly continues to repeat itself over and over. For example, in WWII with Nazi Germany and their genocide of Jews, the WWII internment of Japanese Americans, and the imprisonment of "enemy combatants" at Guantanamo Bay today.

Every time the US seems to take a step in the right direction concerning race, we take two steps back.

Just my $.02.

El Maestro, you are living in a different reality. Go check out how many hospitals have closed in the last 10 years in Southern California, due to unpaid bills in emergency rooms.

How much money is being laundered out of the country, instead of supporting our businesses here? How do European countries grow their crops without illegals? It gets done.

One hidden cost of illegals in Californians is in CalWorks for free daycare for YEARS. About $1,000 a month is directly deposited into the bank accounts of preschools, if the parents claim to be low income. Yet many of the parents sock away HUGE amounts of money that they send out of the country. Or they buy SUVs, get tatoos, and spend $20K on a quincenera party to celebrate a 15 year old's virginity.

If these CalWork recepients can claim they are low income, but get $10 an hour or more tax free, get free food, free appliances, low rent. Then their disposable income is greater than many Americans earning $40K or so, and are just getting by and can't qualify for freebies. I hate it when the government pays more attention to the complaints of illegals, than the problems of its own citizens. California has gone crazy!

The counties get CalWorks from Sacramento. There is not enough oversight. And just how did these parents manage their daycare problems this summer when the budget froze, and the schools didn't get the subsidies? When the schools closed down classes due to the budget freeze and laid off teachers, the parents figured out other childcare. Wow. Problem solved. The families took care of it themselves with friends, family, working different days, etc. Or, they paid someone to watch their kids. What a concept. Personal responsibility.

I say, we push for more personal responsibility, which used to be the American Way, and cut welfare to illegals.

And as for feeling sorry for illegals using false SSNs and having taxes withheld that they won't receive, that is bull. A friend has done bookkeeping for years for a welding company. She says it is worse than ever. One year a whole slew of workers had SSNs that a government agent discovered was from dead babies in a North Carolina graveyard. They split after they were busted. Also, she has young men coming in to work in the early 20s, with lots of dependents. One guy was just 21, claimed several kids and adults. He had 12 dependents! She challenged him, saying he wasn't old enough to have fathered so many kids. He blew her off. He knew the system. She can't cross examine them, because that is harassment. After working 2 months, his SSN turned up phony, and he never came back to "correct" it.

My friend, the bookkeeper is a first generation American born from legal European immigrants. This fraud galls her no end. Her parents had to apply for green cards every few years for decades. Her mom finally got her US citizenship in her early 70's, when her home country allowed dual citizenship.

Posted by El_Maestro on November 15, 2008 at 7:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

dogears and elephantpower simply prove my point; that many think that undocumeted immigrants are the source or this country's problems.

we have more "white" american citizens on welfare, food stamps, and medical than any other ethnic group. more crime in this country is committed by white criminals than any other group, but the ratio of white to non-white inmates reflects the opposite.

european countries are in large part members of the open-bordered european community. elephantpower states that they grow their crops w/o illegals, but in essence much of the workforce throughout the european countries w/bigger economies rely heavily on "outside" labor.

I agree, we should push for more personal responsibility, the American way. But before we can push that on others, everyone has to start with himself.

Posted by lookingfored on November 16, 2008 at 11:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Considering the budget, maybe we should email The Gov suggesting that ALL illegals get booted from ALL programs. And yes, I mean their children too. If they don't like it, they can go home.

El Maestro....one more time...it is not white, brown, black, purple or green...It is legal or illegal. If more legal citizens are on these programs, that is the way it should be. No illegal should be on any of our programs.
Again....legal or illegal.

kelly13 - it was elephantpower who listed "quincenera" as an expense of the illegals, thus focusing on one particular group. that remark by itself clearly shows that his/her focus is on race as well as legal status.
