Educator honored

John K. Sargent, a music teacher at Newbury Park High School, has been recognized as an outstanding music educator by Heritage Festivals.

In April, Sargent and his Concert Choir and Chamber Singers received Gold Awards for their performance at the Seattle Heritage Festival.

In addition, their Panther Chamber Singers were given both the Outstanding Choral Group trophy and the Adjudicator Award. The Adjudicator Award is given only to groups that receive exceedingly high scores from a panel of judges. Because of the way both choirs represented their community and school at the festival, the Newbury Park High School Choirs were also given the "Spirit of Seattle" Award. Since 2004, the performing groups from Newbury Park under Sargent's direction have received many Gold and Silver awards at Heritage Festivals in Seattle, San Francisco and San Diego.

Sargent has been a music educator for nine years and has taught choral music at Newbury Park High School for the past five years.
