Editorial: Bad Credit Hotel
The U.S. Treasury's rollout of an online site to teach young people about finances couldn't have come at a more opportune time. It launched in September, right as major U.S. financial firms started going belly up.
To get a lesson on misusing credit these days, one only has to open his eyes. However, this is a fun way to deal with what can be a scary topic — just ask any Wall Street broker. Go to http://www.controlyourcredit.gov and you will enter the gates to the creepy "Bad Credit Hotel," which takes you to an instructive, interactive game. The theme is "Don't let your credit put you in a bad place." It has information on debt management, credit history and credit scores.
For adults, there are certainly better sites to learn about money matters. But for young people, this is one fun way to learn about an important matter.
The joke, of course, is that there are many financial managers and government regulators who could use a refresher course. There's plenty of room for them at the U.S. Treasury's "Bad Credit Hotel."
If the site needs a theme song, it should be the Eagles' "Hotel California," where you can "check out any time you want, but you can never leave." The Eagles' Don Henley described the song as being about "the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America."
