Incumbents dominate in local congressional races

Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Simi Valley, beat challenger Marta Jorgensen, a Democrat from Solvang, for the 24th Congressional District seat.

Gallegly has represented the district — which includes part of Santa Barbara County most of Ventura County, except for the coastal areas of Oxnard and Ventura — since 1986. Jorgensen won the right to oppose him with her surprise victory in a three-candidate Democratic primary. With 100 percent of the precincts counted, Gallegly had 57 percent to Jorgensen's 43 percent.

Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, first elected in 1998, beat another challenge in the 23rd Congressional District from Republican Matt Kokkonen, a financial planner from San Luis Obispo. Capps had 71 percent of the vote to Kokkonen's 28 percent with 100 percent of the precincts counted. The district runs in a narrow strip up the coast from Oxnard and Port Hueneme, through Ventura and Santa Barbara, to the northern edge of San Luis Obispo County.

In the 30th Congressional District, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Los Angeles, first elected to Congress in 1974, will also keep his seat after running unopposed for an 18th term. His district lies entirely within Los Angeles County, including the cities of Westlake Village, Agoura Hills and Calabasas as well as Beverly Hills and the beach areas from Malibu to the Ventura County line.

As usual the ONLY thing this election has CHANGED in Washington is the man in the White House. We as Americans have RE-ELECTED over 95 percent of the incumbents responsible for the countries problems. The president only signs or vetoes the bill congress passes, they are not his bills. Remember that CONGRESS had an approval rating that was less than the Presidents only a few short months ago, so WHY do we continue to RE-ELECT the same people who are in bed with the lobbists and fill ALL our legislative Acts with PORK. Can ANYONE see 2 more years of the same old Washington deadlock? I won't even talk about the State Legislature you can look for yourself California, maybe a disaster is what we really need to wake people up.
