Navy to host meeting on harbor dredging

The Navy will host a public meeting Wednesday on various restoration programs on the base as well as the planned extensive dredging of the harbor.

The meeting of Naval Base Ventura County's Restoration Advisory Board starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Orvene Carpenter Community Center, 550 Park Ave., Port Hueneme.

The advisory board, created in 1994, is part of a public outreach program involving community members, state and federal regulators and the Navy in environmental restoration issues on the base. Naval Base Ventura County is home to several threatened and endangered species, as well as the largest coastal saltwater marsh in Southern California.

Along with the extensive dredging plan, which calls for contaminated dredged spoils to be buried underwater in the harbor and capped with an impermeable layer of sand, the base has several environmental initiatives, including restoring wetlands and maintaining breeding habitat for snowy plovers and California least terns. On Wednesday, the group will also discuss a plan to remove material from an old landfill on the north side of the Point Mugu Naval Air Station and restore the property to a wetland.

My husband works at Point Mugu's Naval base and we live on Port Hueneme Naval base. The housing was quicker for Hueneme. Anyways, I didn't know there was even a landfill on the base he works at. I think that its good the Navy is trying to help out though from the stories my husband brought back home from being on board an Aircraft carrier, the Navy typically isn't very "Green" or Eco-friendly.
