Carlisle: Kruk joins softball crew

Postseason college baseball and softball is under way on the ESPN networks, but you'll see a little bit of overlap between the two.

John Kruk of "Baseball Tonight" will serve as a game analyst on 10 games during the NCAA Women's College World Series, which continues tonight from Oklahoma City and concludes Tuesday or, if necessary, Wednesday.

Kruk will join play-by-play announcer Beth Mowins, analyst Jessica Mendoza of Camarillo High who is on the U.S. national team and field reporter Holly Rowe.

"He apparently has been a huge softball fan," said Mowins. "The Women's College World Series is one of those things that's on for four or five games in a row and a lot of different people from a lot of different perspectives love watching the games and get hooked on it and Kruk is one of those guys. He's always wanted to be a part of the telecast and this year he was finally able to convince the guys at ESPN to let him come out and work the event."

I've never seen a man who looks more uncomfortable wearing a suit than Kruk does on "Baseball Tonight." Fortunately for him, the dress is a little more casual at the Women's College World Series.

Enough to go around: Ratings for the NBA Playoffs and the NHL's Stanley Cup Finals have gone up significantly this season. The NHL is enjoying a dream matchup with Pittsburgh playing Detroit and the NBA is looking pretty dreamy itself with the Lakers facing Boston.

TNT is averaging a 2.6 rating for the playoffs, up 16 percent from last year's 2.2. Tuesday's Lakers-Spurs game earned a 4.8 rating, up 49 percent from the comparable Pistons-Cavaliers game last year.

ESPN is at a 3.1 rating for the playoffs, up 35 percent from last year. ABC's are at 3.7, up 28 percent from last year.

Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Wednesday night drew a 2.8 rating on NBC and that's up 86.7 percent from last year's 1.5 for the Ducks and Senators. The Penguins finally won Wednesday, assuring NBC of at least a fifth game. In Detroit, the hockey telecast outdrew the Pistons and Celtics on ESPN, 18.2 to 15.9.

Versus' NHL coverage ended with Game 2 of the Finals, which had a 2.0 rating. That was up an astonishing 233 percent from the 0.9 Anaheim and Ottawa pulled in 2007. The 2.6 million viewers was the most any Versus program has ever received.

In other ratings news, Sunday's Indianapolis 500 had a 4.5 rating, up 4.7 percent from last year.

Other notes: The Ventura County all-star high school basketball games will be shown on Time Warner Cable's Channel 36 three times this weekend, starting at 8:30 and 10:30 tonight on a same-day delay. They'll also be on at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. On each day, the girls' telecast is first. We noted last week how DirecTV has several different French Open channels. The folks at Dish Network wanted to make sure everyone knows they also have a deal with Tennis Channel to show multiple matches simultaneously on its interactive mosaic channel.

NFL Network on Monday nights is showing classic games. The first one this Monday will be the 1994 Dolphins-Jets game featuring Dan Marino's fake spike. The next one will be the Chargers-Bengals AFC Championship Game from 1982 played with a wind chill of 37 below. Two competitors, NBC and MTV, are joining to expand the Action Sports Tour. NBC will continue showing the extreme sports events and MTV will provide additional music and lifestyle programming about the tour.
