Students throughout Ventura County were invited to participate in the 2007-2008 Annual Rotary District 5240 essay contest and two out of the twelve winners chosen were from Simi Valley!

This contest was open to students in three categories: elementary school (1-6), middle school(7-8), and high school(9-12). There was a separate division for special needs students who have a documented disability so severe as to prevent them from writing the essay.

In the Elementary School Division, Lauren Marten, a 5th Grader from Township Elementary School, won the 1st Place award of $250. In the High School Division, Shannon Esswein, a 10th grader from Simi Valley High School won the 2nd Place award of $175.

For many decades Rotary Clubs and Rotarians around the world have used the 4-Way Test as an instrument to develop respect and understanding among peoples. The Rotary 4-Way Test is the following: Of the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

The goal of this contest is to encourage students to think about the meaning of The 4-Way Test.
