Notice anything different? We've changed
You may notice a slightly different look to our homepage as well as our story and section pages this morning.
While this was not a major redesign, we wanted to make some changes to accomplish a few things on our site.
First, we wanted to open up the homepage space, air it out a little bit. We also wanted to provide a featured story as well as more headlines at the top of the page.
You may also notice fewer ads (that's right, fewer ads!) and a video player right there on the homepage. We've added more areas to display features while retaining all the section links and headlines that were previously on the homepage.
Inside, on section pages and story pages, you'll also see some minor redecorating. But at its heart, the site still offers the most local news and the best areas to find local homes, jobs and cars.
We hope you like the changes. Please take some time to explore and feel free to e-mail me with complaints, compliments or any bugs you may find. If you're experiencing issues, please include information such as Mac or PC, browser you're using and any other relevant info.
And thanks for visiting VenturaCountyStar.com.

The site lags as it pre-loads the videos. Some of us don't want to watch the videos. We come to look at an online version of a newspaper.
Maybe I am just anti-change, but I am not thrilled with the new design.

I like it overall, but the media player shouldn't load videos automatically, some still have bandwidth issues.

I agree with the other posters, It's ok - dont like the automatic video load. If you want to see it, you should click on it, you shouldnt automatically have to see it though. Just my two cents.

media player on the front page is throwing flash errors.
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
var player = new SWFObject("http://media.venturacountystar.com/co..., "playlist_player", "320", "465", 9, "#FAF6EF");
player.addParam("wmode", "transparent");
player.addParam("allowScriptAccess", "always");
player.addVariable("type", "playlist");
player.addVariable("site", "VCS");
player.addVariable("styleSheet", "http://web.venturacountystar.com/stat...);
player.addVariable("targets", "home");
player.addVariable( "source", "http://dev.venturacountystar.com/play... );
//player.addVariable("mailfriend_url", "");
//player.addVariable("content_url", "");
player.addVariable("autoPlay", "no");
player.addVariable("continuous", "yes");
player.write( "player_None" );
function playerEvent( event ) {
switch( event.type ) {
case "start":
if(event.media == "content")
{
s_pageName = event.label;
setNewPath( event.stats_path );
s_dc(s_account);
}
}
}
window.playlist_player = document.getElementById('playlist_player');

If you use Firefox with the Adblock extension, you wouldn't have even known this web page had ads in the first place.

I noticed you are not allowed to write out certain words anymore. this is making it harder and harder to post on articles. swear words I can understand, but what is wrong with the word S.U.C.K?

The previous page was better. Ads are bigger in this one too.

I like it much better. Of course, I'm using Firefox with NoScript installed.

Don't ask me now, wait a few days and then I will know how I feel about the new page. We never like change, get use to the old one and it is like a old friend, then you come along and make a change, we don't see any good reason for it, I don't. This happens a lot in the ciber space, places decide to make a change, I think the reason is that the people running the page get bored and want to stirr up things, not really good for business.

This new design is WAY cleaner and is less confusing without all those small ads that were all over the page. I don't mind a few bigger ads if there aren't hundreds of small ads everywhere. Just my two pennies for the Star Gods.

Change is nice. Refreshing to have something different every once in a while.

and some people are just born complainers.. they obvisously don't practice "adapt, improvise and overcome..." they just complain about those who do...

Get rid of those annoying flashing ads that dart across the screen!!!!!
Posted by archtmf on May 29, 2008 at 2:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)
It's a good improvement. It's much cleaner and better organized now. I like that there is more room for more breaking news headlines, and that the title of that section is now an actual LINK that you can click on and it takes you to the rest of the headlines.

I don't like it and I keep getting error messages and closes out and back to desktop! Why can't you make it like the regular paper pages?

thanks for trying! to be honest, your old lay out was one of the main reasons i came to the star's website daily & rarely others like the times... i peak at the articles around other tasks & the larger pics / layout you now have make it much harder to navigate if you don't have the window open to full screen (i.e. spreadsheet or doc on half the screen & newspaper on the other half).

Hahaha wow you guys changed it again huh Bruce? Well I do have to say there are some things i like and some things I may not agree with. For starters I like how it looks a little more open and free thats a something good, the flash player with the pics and headlines is something else that is great to see, I think it helps you guys out because there have been times where the words were too big to fit and I was unable to read them or change the slide. I do miss having the headlines right next to the flash player, easier to see.
I don't know about the brief of the main article though. I know it does help bring attention to the related articles and pieces that are attached the story. The biggest thing that just sticks out to me is the media bar or whatever that has photos, videos, Studio 805, etc on there. It just seems like a real eyesore right there and yea I can see how it may be dividing the headlines and the main article from everything else but there has to be something else that can do the job. I dunno its alright. But other than that, everything else seems fine. Keep up the good work Bruce!!!

You should also start banning all the racist commentators that post here everyday. I can't believe how many racists live here in ventura county. You know who you are.

I agree with previous comments - it'd be nice to see less of the Steve Pell spam/ads when I visit this website. Otherwise, the new look is nice.

Change is good, no matter how many people complain. The one thing that stood out to me was the blue bar behind The section tabs (home, news, sports). They weren't super easy to read before and It looks great. Keep up the good work Bruce and Team!

mmshoot you are a regular commentator, I am sure you have read some of the news stories and the accompanying comments, specially if it has to do with a hispanic person, man those guys just go off and post some degrading stuff, and yet they never get banned.

Same old crappy paper!
I also recommend using the Mozilla Firefox browser and installing the Adblock Plus and Flashblock add-ons.
They do WONDERS on this site and it loads so quickly! I feel sorry for the people that are being forced to load a flash video...
