Whisenhunt: Youth sailing sessions offered
Youth sailing programs will get under way soon at Channel Islands and Ventura Harbors.
At Channel Islands Harbor, the Pacific Corinthian Youth Foundation will hold five different sessions for youths 8 to 18. The fee for each session, which includes sailboat charter and T-shirt, is $375.
Session 1 begins June 9 and ends June 20. Session 2 is June 23 through July 3. Session 3 is July 7-18. Session 4 is July 21 through Aug. 1. Session 5 is Aug. 4-15. The program runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

At Ventura Harbor, Robert Compana and Hadley Avery will be instructors for youth 8 to 16 in eight different week-long sessions hosted by Ventura Yacht Club. Youth will be taught in Sabots, Lazers and FJs. The fee is $165 for each week-long session.
The classes run daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The scheduled classes will be: June 16-20; June 23-27; June 30-July 3; July 7-11; July 14-18; July 21-25; July 28-Aug. 1; Aug. 4-8.

Upcoming sailboat races:
n Saturday, Anacapa Island to port. Hosted by Anacapa Yacht Club, this is the first of its Anacapa Island Series. The other races are the Platform A Race on July 5 and the Wes Golemon Memorial (around Anacapa to starboard) on Aug. 9. The skippers' meeting is at 8:30 a.m. and the race will start at 11 a.m. outside Channel Islands Harbor. Entry fee is $75 for the series or $30 for individual races. n Sunday, J-24/PHRF regatta. Hosted by Ventura Yacht Club, this is a one-day regatta for J-24s and for a PHRF class. It is a good opportunity for Olson 30 skippers and crews to tune up for the Olson 30 Nationals which will be held at Channel Islands Harbor in July. The skippers' meeting is at 9 a.m. and racing will start at 11. The entry fee is $40 for the full series of regattas or $10 per regatta. n Saturday, June 7, Cooke Double Handed Series 3. Hosted by Channel Islands Yacht Club, this is the third race in the Bob Cook Memorial Series. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the skippers' meeting is at 8:30. Because the race is around Anacapa Island, the first start will be at 10:30. Entry fee is $35 ($30 for U.S. Sailing members).
n Saturday, June 28, Channel Islands to Marina Del Rey race. This race is co-hosted by Channel Islands Yacht Club and Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club. The skippers' meeting will be at 9 a.m. Spinnaker and non-spinnaker classes will be established based on entries received by 8 a.m. on June 28. Entry fee is $45 ($40 for U.S. Sailing members) if received on or before June 26. They will be $10 more after that. The first class will start at 11 a.m. Sailing instructions will be available starting at 6 p.m. on June 27.
