Pirates activate T.O.'s Wilson

Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson, a former star at Thousand Oaks High, came off the disabled list Tuesday and returned to the lineup for the first time since straining his left calf in the opening week of the season.

The Pirates optioned rookie shortstop Brian Bixler to Triple-A Indianapolis. He batted .175 in 34 games, including 24 starts. His six errors were tied for the team lead.

Wilson hurt himself during the third game of the season and had been bothered by tightness in the muscles during his recovery. He batted .316 in seven rehab starts for Double-A Altoona, and went 4 for 12 in four starts at shortstop for Indianapolis.

Reds call up Bruce, designate Hatteberg: Outfielder Jay Bruce, the Cincinnati Reds' top prospect, was called up from the minors in a move that represents another step toward the franchise's future.

The Reds promoted the 21-year-old outfielder from Triple-A Louisville and designated first baseman Scott Hatteberg for assignment, ending his three-year stay in Cincinnati. The Reds picked up Hatteberg's $1.85 million contract option last October, when they weren't sure whether Joey Votto would be ready to take over at first base. Votto leads NL rookies with 10 homers, and Hatteberg has been reduced to pinch hitting.

Church still suffering from concussion: New York Mets right fielder Ryan Church was sent home, still dizzy after sustaining a concussion last week — his second in less than three months.

Church was examined by a neurologist and underwent an MRI exam that did not reveal any brain injuries, general manager Omar Minaya said. Rather than come to Shea Stadium for New York's game against the Florida Marlins, Church was sent home to rest and told to avoid bright lights.

In other injury news, reliever Matt Wise was placed on the 15-day disabled list with weakness in his right shoulder, and the Mets recalled right-hander Carlos Muniz from Triple-A New Orleans. Also, Pedro Martinez (hamstring) is slated to make a rehab start tonight for Class-A St. Lucie. He is likely to rejoin New York's rotation early next week in San Francisco.
