La Reina's Conway wins USGA leadership award
La Reina High senior Kelsey Conway was named the female recipient of United States Golf Association's 2008 Presidents' Youth Leadership Award.
Smylie Kaufman of Birmingham, Ala., was the male recipient.
The award recognizes one male and one female junior golfer who demonstrate leadership, character and community service through their involvement with the USGA/AJGA (American Junior Golf Association) Youth Leadership Club — a joint initiative founded in 2005 to further develop junior golfers through volunteerism.
As an AJGA member participating in this program, members are expected to represent the YLC through sportsmanship, character, integrity and leadership.
Conway is being recognized primarily for her volunteerism as a Special Olympics golf coach, as well as an Eagle Certified teen mentor through First Tee of Ventura County.
It also celebrates years of dedication to volunteerism within her local community and at La Reina High.
As a President's Youth Leadership Award winner, Conway receives four U.S. Open tickets for a future event, including access to the USGA hospitality area.
In addition, she receives an automatic entry into the 2008 Rolex Tournament of Champions, this year being held at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind. The Rolex is the preeminent junior invitational golf tournament in the nation, bringing together the top-ranked national and international players.
Kaufman and Conway will be honored and formally presented their awards during the Rolex Dinner of Champions on July 3.
