$120,000 spent on Yes on G campaign

Limoneira Co. has spent nearly $120,000 promoting Measure G, which would allow it to develop land on the eastern edge of Santa Paula, according to statements released Tuesday by Santa Paula.

Most of the campaign money went to pay consultants and campaign workers, hold events and buy signs, mailers and other materials. The biggest single recipient was Consensus Planning Group, a consulting firm in Los Angeles that was paid $35,575.

The Yes on G campaign's total of $118,752 in spending through May 17 is modest when compared with other recent development campaigns in Santa Paula. Pinnacle Development Co. spent more than $1 million on a campaign in 2006, and Centex spent close to $1.5 million in a separate campaign that same year. Both lost, although Pinnacle's proposal to develop Adams Canyon was approved in a slightly different form a year later.

Measure G will be on Tuesday's ballot in Santa Paula. If it passes, Limoneira will be allowed to build as many as 1,500 homes on its 500-acre site, along with stores, office buildings, schools and parks.

The plan must go to voters because the property is currently outside city limits. Santa Paula's SOAR law, like those elsewhere in the county, requires voter approval to develop open space or agricultural land outside of current urban boundaries.
