Hitting off uphill and downhill lies
The more severe the slope, the smaller the swing
Ask Jon Question #4
Question: How can I play better off uphill and downhill lies? -- Dan from Simi Valley
Answer: If you play a lot of courses where you are having trouble with uphill or downhill lies, here are some things to think of that will help your game.
Whether you are faced with an uphill or downhill lie, you must set up with your shoulders level to the slope you are hitting from, and swing the club along that slope.
You need to do this whether it's a chip, pitch, or full swing. Keep in mind, if a full shot is required, the more severe the slope, the more the swing should be reduced to allow yourself to keep your balance during the swing.
If you are hitting on an up slope, the ball will launch at a higher angle, and will fly shorter than from a level lie.
If you are hitting from a down slope, the ball will launch at a lower angle and you should play for the ball to roll more than normal when your are playing from a standard lie.
From these types of lies it is important to pay close attention to where your club is striking the ground during your practice swings.
The club will tend to strike the ground further back in your stance from both types of uneven lies, so you need to be aware of that when playing your shot. Try these tips and I'm sure you will improve from uneven lies.
