Woman re-arrested in drive-by
A 23-year-old woman was arrested Sunday on suspicion of attempted murder and participation in a criminal street gang after a monthlong investigation into a drive-by shooting outside an El Rio home, law enforcement officials said.
Janelle Mata was booked into Ventura County Jail on Sunday and was being held in lieu of $610,000.
The shooting occurred April 20 in the 2500 block of Balboa Street, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. When deputies arrived at the scene they found two bullet holes in the victim's residence. Witnesses described a female suspect.
About 25 minutes later deputies stopped a car at Alvarado Avenue and Orange Drive. The officers found a sawed-off shotgun hidden in a blanket, as well as three handguns and ammunition that were concealed in the vehicle that Mata, her 22-year-old sister Naomi Mata, two other women, a 2-year-old child and 2-month-old infant were in, according to the statement.
Naomi Mata, who was driving the vehicle, was arrested for a number of weapons charges, authorities said. Janelle Mata was arrested on suspicion of shooting at a dwelling, possession of a stolen gun and other weapons charges. Both women were booked into Ventura County Jail and posted bail.
The re-arrest of Janelle Mata on Sunday stemmed from additional evidence the Sheriff's Gang Unit and Major Crimes investigators found linking her to the shooting, according to the statement. Investigators believe she intentionally fired a gun at a female who was standing in front of the home at the time. Mata is a documented El Rio gang member.

It disturbs me that charges of **"Child Endangerment" have not been brought against ALL the women in that car in which a 2 year old and 2 month old were placed in danger. Those women don't deserve to have the children in their custody. The only chance they have is to be raised by someone other than these gang terrorists.
**Penal Code 273a (a) “…or willfully causes or permits that child to be placed in a situation where his or her person or health is endangered, shall be
punished by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year, or in the state prison for two, four, or six years."
Bookem' all; prosecute'm all. Remove the innocent children from danger. Give them a chance to make it in life.

Wow, WTF is wrong with these people! I mean bring 2 small children on a drive by? Who's wonderful thinking was this!!!! Did the original story mentioned these idiots had two small children in the car? What a horrible life these kids are set up to have. I hope that they aren't the children of the Mata girls cuz we all know that their parents weren't there for them and their brother (that is the excuse for them acting this way apparently said by others)... if the CPS takes them and gives them to other family members I sure hope it isn't the grandparents! Oh good lord! Get these two kids away from El Rio and these people fast!

Two points: 1. I'm white and the the only thing (WHITEPRIDE) Mexicans as a race are guilty of is having great food that has increased my waistline! Don't let "race" be the issue. ALL races have their share of bad apples as I found in my career and life in general. Most Hispanics & Whites are good people; sharing some of the same values & hopes. Both get embarassed by those who do wrong. I grew up around Mexicans and Blacks and Whites. Many were GREAT people, not rich, yet having them in my life made me very wealthy. I cherished their friendship as a child and now in old age. The only thing I do disagree with is when ANY race has a problem with another, and when they don't have a VALID argument, the pull out the race card.
In this case, these people are PEOPLE who should NOT be allowed to raise and endanger these children. It is an issue where the press fails to go and where we see no fired up rally. They are on the path to destruction... which is far more serious than is realized. Who knows if CPS will get involved. In the interim, LET US PRAY for them.

Whitepride - Are you saying that it's in your culture to be a skinhead? or any African American to be a member of the Black Panthers? If we are Hipanic in Ventura County our culture is to be in the El Rio gang, or Oxnard Chiques? I don't think so. I think in this county there are more fine educated hard working Hispanics than there are gang members.
Please choose your words carefully, I think we all who comment here are just as frustrated as you with any type of violance no matter where it happens or who does it. Especially when children are exposed. Some of us here are parents and doing anything and everything possible to avoid our children from getting into this type of activity, so how about you stop assuming that every Hispanic has it in their culture to be in a gang, this would mean an opportunity to win a battle that has been going on for a very long time, it's called "racism". I am sure you are a fine human being that does so much for your community, I would never call you a skin head although your username suggests... well never mind.

alloyz25........are you suggesting mountain folk are stupid? that's actually more discriminatory than whitepride generalizing 1/6th of oxnardians. and just what are his 'type?'
and high society took offense to "our culture". unless you're in a gang, too, whitepride didn't say anything about your culture, whatever it may be. interesting profiling here.

WHITEPRIDE - Your Obviously trying to get some kind of reaction or attention. Believe me, if someone else of color or Mexican decent slung ignorant stereotyoes as easily as you do, I'd be saying saying the same thing. The fact is that these girls are the lowest common denominator of or society, especially reading that children were invloved. You are right in one apect, "Their Culture". This is part of their culture, not ours. Considering your screen name, you might have a part in what we call, "Your Culture" of hate and bigotry.

Whitepride said nothing of race or mexicans.
These women are part of a "gang" culture. Unfortunatley their children may get caught up in the same cycle of violence.
And a large geographic portion of Oxnard is under gang injunctions. Which only applies to a small percentage of Oxnard, whom are known gang members.
Posted by rebel123 on May 27, 2008 at 8:13 a.m. (Suggest removal)
There is nothing in the Hispanic culture that advocates this type of behavior. The gang related crime in Oxnard reflects not the culture of the individuals involved but their poor choices and an outcome of their socio-economic situation that is mirrored across this country and across many races. To assign gang violence to a culture is ignorant. The vast majority of Hispanics living in Oxnard are law abiding, hard working people. Their love of family is epic, especially when it comes to the little ones. These chicas do NOT represent the majority of their culture!!

The two year old was in the car with Janelle when she had the "accident" last week. The two year old was in the car with her when she did the drive by with all the weapons. I hope to hell that the poor two year old was taken into protective custody.
This name Mata keeps pooping up in the paper and it isn't for winning a spelling bee. The homies are famous for having a car wash to raise money for their people, why don't they raise some money for spaying and neutering?

Well said rebel123...as a hispanic that lives in El Rio I can assure you all that not ev everyone living in El Rio is raising their children to be gang members. My family roots go back over 100 years to this area. I tell my childrenand grandchildren the stories of how quaint El Rio used to be when I was a child. How the worst trouble we got into was when we got caught eating grandmas strawberries. My children were brought up to respect others, and themselves. Obviously this is something that the Mata's failed to teach thier children. I have kids on the honor roll, I volunteer at the schools, and I am happy to do so. Parents cant sit back and just let life happen, you have to participate, and stop wanting to be thier friend, you have to be thier parent! Not everyone in El Rio is bad, just like not everyone living in Ventura is a snob. Some of us still care about our community, our children and our future, so if you want to help keep kids off the streets, why not volunteer at your local school, be a mentor, or donate to after school activities. Sports, cheer, band, school clubs all help children make good life choices, keeps them off the streets, and gives them something positive to do. Its a shame there are no articles letting us know the positive things our kids are doing. Then maybe we could get more names in the paper for the right reasons instead of all the wrong!

this is why anyone who is ever convicted of any kind of gang crime should immediately be "fixed". there is absolutely no reason why anyone who condones gang violence should be allowed to breed. and since a large majority of these gang bangers are in to multiple kids with multiple partners, it should be even more of a reason to neuter these losers.
As long as the government continually allows this to happen, the cycle of gang violence will not end.
I bet if you check these losers computers or myspace pages, you will see pictures of them at parties flashing gang signs, with the kids in the same pictures.
losers. all of them.

El Rio, Colonia, South Oxnard, and so on. These areas in Oxnard have some ruthless and ignorant individuals that terrorize our community. It is unfortunate that the only news we hear from these neighborhoods is negative. As HateMachine stated, there are good people that live here. There are great families with rich traditions that live in these neighborhoods and they make up our community. There is so much more in our community than the few fools that make it to the Star headlines.

What can one say. These sorry excuses for human beings do have kids and are out committing bad crimes.
As of right know, "family members" have the children in their custody. I don't know them so I can't say for sure if this is a good thing.
The Sheriffs Dept. released the kids to them, so I'm hoping they are better off.
Guns are extremely loud when fired, especially shotguns. I hope the two little ones ears were not affected. I'm sure they had to be scared hearing the gunshots from so close, even if the idiot fired from outside the window.
I hope the "family members" are in good standing and do the right thing and take the kids away, now! while they are still too young to understand what is happening and they are able to break the cycle.
The Mata's are a piece of crap!!

Oh my gosh, where are the people who were defending Janelle Mata in the posts last week about her brother? "She's got a great heart and can't help it because her parents weren't around much."
And to have those small children in the car at the time of this shooting? That's criminal in and of itself. I hope that those children are taken away and placed with a loving and law-biding family.

daugtherofimmigrant: Thank you for the compliment and the offer. The thought of home-cooked Mexican food leaves me salivating!! My first taste of Mexican food came when I was probably 4-5 years old. A group of lemon pickers where having lunch and heating tortillas & beans on a campfire. One of them made this little "gringo" a buritto and THAT was the beginning of my desire for Mexican food. Looking back, here was probably a typical hardworking guy who didn't have much, yet he shared with a little twirp! Later in life my buddies across the street (Mexican heritage) had a mother who could cook like no other. And she really spoiled me with great Mexican food. God rest her soul. So to WHITEPRIDE all I can say is: I am white too, but try not to let race be the determining factor in my views of others, rather, I choose to evaluate them on their actions. I my experience dealing with criminals, I can tell you they come in ALL colors/races... including mine. Go out and have some great Mexican food... it will make you feel better!

you know, back in the day we could write a letter to the editor, without worrying that our home would be burned down, or we would be the victim of a cowardly act. nowadays, it is really easy for these criminals to track you down. nowadays they dont think twice about shooting around innocent people. gang bangers are cowards nowadays. I miss the good old days, where a few guys could get in a little tussle without worrying about someone carrying a heater. that does not happen anymore. you have little kids in the hood emulating their older brothers, and to some extent, their parents.
I know a small handful of the posters on this site. the ones I know are hardworking individuals who use this site to vent their frustrations about the crap we are dealing with on a day to day basis.
most of us dont live in the areas where a lot of this crime happens. therefore, we dont have much say in the community that is crumbling. however, those of you who actually live there are the ones that need to stand up and fight against the criminals who are destroying your "hood". if you feel so strongly about your "hood" do something to make it safer for the kids...

somehow i feel deprived because i never got to see "whitepride's" comments that set everyone off. that's happened in several articles now. lathough with a screen name like that, i can imagine what kind of drivel he must spew.
as far as for these losers, i'm struck speechless at what kind of mind (if you can call it that) would take small children on their drive-by.
unfortunately, that kind of stupidity is part of their culture....gang culture. it has nothing to do with race. all the gangsters are equally stupid, be they "chiques", "bloods", "skins", "tongs" or what have you. they all "think" alike. stupidity transcends all racial boundaries.

The only one thing I didn't agree with was your comment way up above, you said that "it sounds like a white girl trying to speak Spanish". Meaning yourself but, "Gotcha (got your) til (until),crib (home, house, a baby's bed), and hooka (hooker)" are definitely not Spanish. Sounds like English slang to me. I know that you got caught up and having fun because of these mensas (dummies) happen to be Hispanic, but just because they speak like they never went to school it doesn't mean it's Spanish.
Have a wonderful day, and continue on with your commenting. :O)

daugtherofimmigrant...
I apologize if my comment was out of context but I was referring to the "white girl speaking Spanish" as a figure of speech meaning that people (no matter what nationality) can hardly speak or pronunciate that of another culture's way of speaking. Let's try having a person who speaks English (from American heritage) try rolling the R's as many Spanish words require... most of us can't. It wasn't meant to mean that the slang I was using was referenced directly to the Spanish speaking community rather that I am unable to speak Spanish as due justice for their culture because I lack the rolling of the R's if you will. I completely understand that "gangsta slang" is not simply associated with hispanics. I am niether stupid nor nieve to that. I was mearly using the common language faux paus of one culture trying to speak as another culture correctly and without disrespect. Sorry if you took it otherwise.

NothingButTheTruth ~ awwh you just reminded me of when I was growing up, my parents were also field workers, on the weekends when my parents had to work they would take us with them. It was so much fun, I am sure my parents will never say the same you know "fun", at lunch time everyone would start campfires and heat up their lunches man those burritos were so good!!! My parent's boss was White, and I think he thought he was in heaven he had a potluck everday. I remember my parents & co-workers feeling sorry for him and giggling at times because he would have fast food everyday and when he had a home cooked meal it was a bologna sandwich. :O) Fortunately my parents dont have to work as hard, my dad still works outdoors at a ranch but all he does now is drive around in his company truck, he still takes his lunch but it's not the same (like he says) now he has an office where he has a microwave and heats up his food. LOL! My dad is funny! I think it's a Mexican thing, you know feeding people, especially other nationalities. My dad's boss says that he is still not sure if my dad has kept his job for his hard work or my mom's cooking. :O)

Ms Cali ~ apology accepted, but let me explain why I felt offeneded, through out all of the comments it sounds like you guys are trying to speak Street talk, slang, gang talk, or what ever, just to have a little fun and that's all good,:O) all the talk/slang you have used or most of it I should say is English slang, when you made your comment as to "White girl trying to speak Spanish", never were you trying to speak "Spanish". You were attempting to speak I think Gangster. Because you used the word "Spanish" opposed to what you explained you actually meant, is why I was a tad bothered, perhaps "white girl trying to speak another language" would have been cool. But it's o.k. I was just putting this out there, I guess Spanish/Hispanic tends to come out a little easier than any other nationality, just like the run a way bride, she said she was kidnapped by Hispanics, when she fled on her own because she got cold feet. Or like George Lopez has said in his stand up, a bank was robbed, the robber gave the teller a note asking for money, he was wearing a mask and gloves, the teller thought he was Hispanic :O) WTF?
I know those darn rolling of the R's always gets everyone, girl try speaking Vietnamese! I work with a lot of Vietnamese and man you thought Spanish was hard!

I was not trying, I was speaking the gangster/street talk/slang because I grew up in that environment, around gang-bangers and have heard everyday the way they talk amongst eachother. I've moved out of the area but have not quite forgotten their lingo. That's why I find it hilarious that we are getting a kick out of this article. But like you said, it's all good in the hood. =)
Pog-you can also throw in there some skits from the Rap Supreme Show or Lady Rap Supreme, or whatever it's called.

NothingButTheTruth~ LOL! My dad cracks me up, I guess that is as close to camping as we ever got! My dad laughs at people who have invited him to camp, he can't believe people actually do it for fun, he said that is the way they used to live when he was growing up in Mex. and heck no will he do that again. When I watch re-runs of little house, he says "look, that's exactly how we lived, and worse". Exactly, and worse? LOL! (i tell you he is a crack up) Of course I start crying because I am a big cry baby, and to see all that he has accomplished with no education what so ever, makes me so proud, I am still trying to figure out where he learned to speak English though? So you did go to Mexican yesterday? Chinese today huh? hee-hee. My husband is also Hispanic but he is like 4th generation so I tell him he is a coconut (you know brown on the outside white on the inside), he said he knew he was marrying me when he met my mom! What??

RElvd98 - You were speaking gangster/streettalk/ slang. Oh o.k. I stand corrected.
I know you guys are all having a little fun. I know what you mean, you think these stories get old but these idiots always come up with something new that leaves us in dismay. Driveby day care? WTF? Like I told Ms Cali I was just a little bothered by her comment in regards to "White girl trying to Speak Spanish" not by the way you were speaking/writing and it's all good, I know now she didn't mean what she said. I don't know if you are Hispanic or not but it's so hard to live in the County where all these Hispanics do the dumbest things, yet there are a lot of Hispanics do so much good out there and you never hear about it. I mean I am one of those where I start listening to "breaking news" and it's not good news, I pray that I don't hear a Hispanic name because that will just be more ammunition for people to dislike us even more. So when I hear or read someone bringing down Hispanics or Spanish yeah it does bother me. I guess I feel like I need to defend our culture because we are not all bad apples. :O) I gotta go, I have to get to work. Have fun.

daugtherofimmigrant...I live in Oxnard; trust me, I feel your pain. While you pray the names are not Hispanic, I pray the crime did not happen in Oxnard or by someone who is from Oxnard.
There are definitely more good ppl than bad ppl in the world. Unfortunately for Hispanics, the majority of gang-bangers in the county are Hispanic. It would piss me off too if I was Hispanic. I'm white and the white supremacist gangs are an embarrassment to our race.
I love the stories you shared about your dad. Sounds like he's a really fun guy. Lucky you!

Beahappi - thank you for the compliment, my dad is pretty wonderful. I guess because of his hard work and the struggles he went through is what makes my brother and my self think about all my parents have done before we do something stupid. I just recently had to appear in front of a judge because I received a ticket for tinted Windows. Well.. I haven't heard the end of it, my brother now claims he is the one with out a criminal background, and tells my parents that he is sorry for my actions. How he feels so embarrased for them to have a daughter that had to stand in front of a judge. LOL!! My parents also were giving me a hard time all in fun they even checked my face to see if I had a tear drop tattoo on my cheek (that was just wrong). But let me tell you I did feel like a criminal and I don't ever want to be put in that spot again. I still can't believe I had to go to a court appt. over tinted windows! Like I have mentioned many times, and I am sure you have seen it in one of my comments, my parents both worked very hard, very late hours, and when possible they would take us with them. When it wasn't possible my brother and I stayed home and waited for them. My dad never played ball with us, and we never complained, his dad never played with him so my dad didn't really know how to show much affection, give us advice or anything of that sort. My brother and I could have used that "Excuse" of bad parenting to do any bad thing possible. Instead we realized how hard they workd and they were doing it for us to give us what we needed. We could never let my parents down, after all they did for us? Oh heck no. There was no way we were going to misbehave and give them more head aches knowing that they were coming home after working 10-12 hours under the sun carrying 70 lb sacks full of fruit. We could never let our parents down and that is what allows to be good people.
I should correct myself, when I read the news or hear it I do pray not to hear a Hispanic name, but believe me I also pray that it didn't happen in the County or my home town.

Ok, that there palomita is one whole sentence.
So, first, the cops were waiting at La Diabla's house with back-up. Second, La Diabla then arrived with her sister, a friend and the friend's 2-month old baby? Finally, just when they were leaving, La Diabla was pulled over?
Is this correct?

People, people...settle down! It's obvious the girlz did not have time to properly do their make-up and hair. The desired "street-wise" look can be achieved with the proper amount of severe make-up.
A little black eyeliner goes a long way!

mmshoot...oh no, I think we need a professional for that job! My make-up application skills can't hold a candle to these girlz! I tend to go with the 'less is more' approach. Definitely not a good fit here.

Palomita- Projecting blame on a person who was shot at is minimizing criminal behavior. Whatever she did to "upset" Janelle is irrelevant.
Janelle Mata is a gang member. Gang members retaliate and strike back. It's Janelle's criminality that got her into the situation she is in, not the person she shot.

Look, I will not be happy unless they release her again to be arrested later so I can see as a headline: "Woman re-re-arrested for crimes against humanity."

God I hope he's saved!! I hope he's able to be taken out of such violent atmosphere!! Can you imagine what this child will grow up to be if left near these people any longer??? Wake up CPS and smell the coffee!!
