Simi Valley baseball team reaches final
Simi Valley High's bid for a CIF-Southern Section baseball remains alive - but it took some extra work to keep it that way.
Eric Bernstein's sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th inning allowed the Pioneers to edge Mater Dei, 6-5, in a Division I semifinal at UC Riverside, sending Simi Valley (24-8) to Friday's championship game at Dodger Stadium.
Simi Valley will play the winner of the late game between Norco and Long Beach Wilson at 7:30 p.m.
Simi Valley trailed 4-3 after a wild first inning, but took a 5-4 lead in the sixth on an RBI double by Matt Orloff and a run-scoring single by Eric Bernstein. But Mater Dei tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on consecutive one-out singles by Aaron Northcraft, Brian Frattali and Derek Campbell - the last off reliever Jonathan Meyer, taking over for starter Nick Russo - before Meyer struck out the next two batters to send the game to extra innings.
