Oxnard falls to top seed, 2-1

Beltran allows only three hits in quarterfinal loss

Mikel Beltran had an extra day to study for the most important game of his career.

And extra incentive.

Postponed one day and moved from Redlands because of unplayable field conditions due to heavy rain, Oxnard's record-breaking season came to an end Saturday with a 2-1 home loss to top-seeded Redlands East Valley in the Division II baseball quarterfinals.

Ryan Burcroff scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth — East Valley was designated the home team — on a one-out sacrifice fly by Josh Salmon.

East Valley (25-3), which advanced to the semifinals for the first time in program history, will face Palos Verdes on the road on Tuesday. Oxnard finished the season at 21-6-1.

Beltran (10-2), who saw his school-record 10-game winning streak stopped, allowed only three hits and none after the third inning.

"I was mad that the game was changed because I was pumped up Friday," said Beltran.

He was unshaken when light showers sprinkled the Oxnard field on three occasions Saturday.

"I knew that the rain wouldn't last long," he said. The game was never interrupted by the weather.

Against an East Valley lineup that had five hitters with averages of .408 or better, Beltran maintained his poise.

"I had my study sheet, so I knew that I wasn't going to get a lot of strikeouts," he said. "I had faith that my defense would help me."

Oxnard second baseman Austin Davidson turned in two defensive gems, first baseman Derek Shutt cut down a lead runner at third and catcher Mario Landeros threw out a runner trying to steal a base.

Landeros scored the game's first run. He opened the third inning with a walk, advanced to second on a Blake Andrade's single and touched home after a wild pitch.

East Valley countered in the bottom half of the inning. UCLA-bound Tyler Chatwood doubled, moved to third on a ground out and beat Davidson's throw to the plate on a grounder.

"The ball game could have gone either way on numerous occasions," said Redlands coach Steve Hernandez.

"To get to the end of the journey, we must get over some major, major hurdles. We beat an outstanding Oxnard baseball team."

Chatwood, who pitched a one-hitter against Redondo on May 16, struck out seven in five innings. Ranked No. 34 on Baseball America's high school recruiting list, Chatwood was pulled after reaching the program's maximum pitch count of 80.

"It was good to see a guy who might be a second- or third-round draft pick," said Oxnard coach Al Tarazon. "And we hit him."

Oxnard stratched out four hits against Chatwood.

The Yellowjackets left runners in scoring position in six innings against two East Valley pitchers.

"We gave ourselves the opportunities to win," said Tarazon, "but we just couldn't get the run across."

Oxnard finished its season with 77 doubles, the fourth-highest total in section history.

Eight players graduate from the 2008 Oxnard team, but the program returns four players who started this season.

"We've built a good foundation for the future," Tarazon said. "We'll be pretty good again next year."
