Cherries are here; other summer fruits to follow
Cherry lovers were greeted at farmers markets early this month by an appropriate treat: the seasonal debut of the heart-shaped red fruit.
Expect the ensuing affair to last at least through early June, depending on the kind of cherry in question.
First to arrive were the Brooks (pictured at right), sold by K&K Farms of Fresno in plastic containers.
The price was $4 for the small size and $6 for the large, which turned out to contain about three and a half cups of fruit.
This week, check the K&K booth for Rainiers, a yellow variety with a red blush on its shoulders.
Still to come are Tulares and crisp, red-black Bings.
Also in the markets: Castlebrite apricots, $2 per pound, Early Treat peaches, $2.25 per pound, and blueberries, $4 per basket.
The berries will be $3.25 per pound when Underwood Family Farms in Somis opens its seasonal, pick-your-own blueberry fields to the public starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.
