After dropping out, candidate returns to House race

After dropping out of the Democratic primary for the 24th congressional district and throwing her support behind another candidate, Marta Jorgensen of Solvang has done an about face and jumped back into the race at the 11th hour.

"I'm doing this because people asked me," Jorgensen said today. "I want to make it clear to Jill and to Mary, they shouldn't feel irked. I am only responding to the request of north county. I didn't plan to jump in and be a spoiler."

Jill Martinez of Oxnard and Mary Pallant of Oak Park are the two other candidates in the June 3 Democratic primary for the seat in the U.S. House of Representatives held by Republican Elton Gallegly of Simi Valley for more than 20 years.

The 24th District covers most of Ventura County, except for the coastal portions of Ventura, Oxnard and Port Hueneme, and inland Santa Barbara County.

Jorgensen dropped out of the race in April and endorsed Martinez.

Today, Jorgensen said she was approached by several residents who said they were not going to vote because they felt the two candidates had not campaigned in their area.

Martinez said she has campaigned in Santa Barbara County and she doubted Jorgensen's decision to re-enter the race would have much impact.

"I believe it's a two-person race between Mary and I," Martinez said. "I can appreciate Marta has specific concerns. I had hoped her concerns would be addressed through my campaign but at this point I'm not sure what her complaints are."

Martinez: " I believe it's a two-person race between Mary and I." Just what we need, another illiterate politician!
